... heh, anyway -- observing my own 13-year-old sister, she tends to like platformers and puzzle games. She might like roleplaying games, but I'd need to reintroduce them to her... I introduced her to Final Fantasy III for the SNES a long time ago, but she gave up on it, saying it was too hard for her. Given that reading is a regular hobby of hers now, though, I think she might appreciate the storyline this next time I show the game to her.
My older brother and I also showed her some Sierra Adventure Titles more recently, and she really enjoyed those. My sis and I played King's Quest I VGA and King's Quest II AGI together, and we had good times; my older brother also played King's Quest V and VI (both of 'em being the CD versions), and they completed those two games together. My sister also seems to prefer Space Quest I AGI over Space Quest I VGA... and she's telling me she wants her own Quest for Glory character also.
The ages of the graphics don't seem to be too important -- but given how much my older brother and I are classic gamers (My older brother's almost 24, and I'm 21) and how much of an influence we have on our younger sister, I think she's learned to appreciate the given art style for a certain gaming time period regardless of what's currently available. Which is good, of course. :)

look at it this way, he asked a group made up of mostly guys (maybe all guys, have Tash or Daala replied to this post yet?) what girls played...you're only going to get answers that seem "girly" (like RPG's, puzzles, rythem games, and probably not fighting)
similarly if you asked a group of girls "what games do guys play?" you're going to get answers like "They play Tomb Raider, Doom, and Mortal Kombat because they like boobies, are all fucked up in the head, and like to see blood"
looking at people as a "generalization" and not as people is why "Mary Kate And Ashley's Shitty Game of the Month" keep being made... girls probably like "good" games, just like a lot of male gamers...

i suppose it'd be a bit different if the question was something similar to "any girls out there? i was wondering what kind of games you prefer"
sadly, the games you mentioned that "girls would say guys play" really are what a lot of mainstream guy gamers play. i'm not saying any of those games you mentioned are necessarily crappy. i'm just saying that a majority of guys fit the stereotype as well. i remember in high school, finding out that some guys in my class played video games and i was like "whoa, cool! so what games do you guys play?" and the replies "oh, man, madden this and nhl that, tony hawk this and extreme that, and tomb raider! omg, that girl is so hot. did you see the movie? *senseless chatter that goes on for 15 mintues* yea! a beautiful shot of her ass! i saw that part too!" it made me want to claw my eyes out to have something better to do
ah, reminds me of a story (yea, i'm going off topic. i forgot where i was going with the topic anyways hehe). the other day, while visiting some crappy game store to preview Contra (which i bought later for $40!! WHOOOOOOOO!!!!! i'm so excited about this game. i believe i'll start another thread about it soon. anyways, with the story), i overheard a conversation between two kids that were probably in intermediate (either that or freshmen in high school). the older kid argues, "i HATE it when people say i'm a perv or i'm horny because i want to buy bmxxx. it's just a game! a video game's a video game! i just wanna buy it to play it. that's all." the little kid, of course, agreed with him. i swear i wanted to tell that little rat off, but god i don't even know where to start with that jackass of a statement. haha, bmxxx is such a joke. yay, more polygonal hooters ..... wait, AND extreme bike action??!!! SOLD! i swear, it's as if the kid said he buys Playboy for the clever articles
and while i'm on the topic (haha, again, what topic? *goes back into wacky berserker orochi jjj mode*), dear god who buys that Mary Kate and Ashley dog crap?!! yes, some poor, thoughtless, senseless, automaton schoolchildren, who will one day join the rest of the mainstream automatons. yes, those children without real minds or souls of their own, but WHO ELSE?!! i see that shit in every freakin' store i visit and it drives me nuts that some freakin' company is MASS-PRODUCING these things >_<

first, it was a Powerpuff Girls game you told me to flush... and second, I ain't clogging my toliet to destroy a game no matter how bad it is!!! (instead 'accidently' lost it in my garage)

sadly I'm aware mainstream gamers play those games, which is mainly why I mentioned them... just because dumb mainstream gamers like Maiden and Tomb Raider doesn't mean all guys do... and just because dumb girls like FF8 for it's man-tastic males and there's 95% you'll a see a girl playing DDR at an arcade doesn't mean all girls are like that either.

HAHAHA! With the recent announcement that the PS2 version (and come on, we all know this kid has a PS2) is censored I wonder if that kid's going to want to "just play the game" any more... I also wonder if he plans to buy the superior Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX or the non-M-rated Dave Mirra 3... you know, since he's obviously an advid BMX fan whose in no way swayed by poorly rendered tities.
(pfff, like I'm one to make fun of that kid -__- I already pre-ordered DoAX and I'm 45% sure I didn't do that for the volleyball)

You know... I never really thought about it but that does raise a creepy point... most crappy games have 2 or 3 sequels (with Mary Kate and Ashley having a pointless huge line of games)... wouldn't people learn after part 2 the games suck? (maybe that would prevent us from having to deal with Tomb Raider 3 through 60)

hahaha, i'm one to talk too. i forgot about that volleyball game. if i had an XBox, i'd definitely invest money in it whenever it's released. not so much for the obvious, but mainly for the accessories. (i know a lot of you know this but) you can collect points (or cash, or whatever the currency is in the game) to purchase NEAT ACCESSORIES!! how cool is that?! i'm probably sounding very sarcastic right now but i'm dead serious. this is from someone who absolutely loves alternative colors, alternative outfits, and other customizable options. (hehe, i had a freakin' blast with the Sims.) accessories plus the doa chicks equals neat!
i also read in some magazine about some expensive-ass cat ears that take HOURS of gameplay to cash in. man, count me in! something's probably wrong with me but i love unlocking new stuff (speaking of unlocking, i unlocked an extra life in Contra! whee!)
EDIT: man, i just reread my posts. i really need to get some rest and finish this homework tomorrow. any more caffeine and my head might explode

While this topic has long since denegrated in to arguing over minutia (nothing inherently wrong with that), I shall provide my two cents nonetheless.
No offense, guys, but a LOT of you need to get out more. There are a lot more female gamers out there than you might think. I worked at EB for nearly 4 years (impossible to do without having had a great manager) and came to know many of the regular female customers (of which there were many).
While the ladies do have widely varying tastes (my current gf can't get enough of Animal Crossing <shrug>), the vast majority were in to RPGs, puzzle games, and Bemani. Many of them would complain about the overly-complex control schemes in most action games and simply preferred a good story or a simple concept done very well.
Is that sexist? Hell no. In case you hadn't noticed, WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT. I'm not talking about secondary sex characteristics, either. I'm referring to their entirely different forms of communication, emotional expression, and general approach toward life. There's nothing wrong with that. The vast majority of them find Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Phil inspirational figures while the vast majority of guys find them to be grossly irritating at best. Not all... just most. Generalizations are when you don't recognize or acknowledge that statements like the ones I've made don't apply to an entire group.
In summary, the majority of female gamers (not ones who just play because their bf does) are in to RPGs (hot guys aren't necessary, mostly just a good story... but I'm sure hot guys don't hurt), puzzle games, and Bemani. Oh... and the Namco fighting games. I have no idea why. (apart from perhaps the fairly forgiving control scheme)
