"About the PS2 Network Adapter..." , posted Tue 29 Oct 07:41:post reply

I was at the mall a few days ago and I saw the PS2 Network Adapter and I was about to get it, but there's some things I need to know about it first.

I'm at college and I was wondering if it would work on the network here? Does anyone go to college and uses this thing, or knows someone who does use it? That's the only question I need answered. I mean can you use it in your dorm room?

I could really use the ethernet port on it here to play Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 with all kinds of people.

I would assume it would work. It's a modem and an ethernet adapter in one, so unless your college is doing something funky it should be all good. Our connection drops every once ina while on my campus network for some reason, but other than thst it works great.

Thanks!

I have one more question. Do you have a subscribe to a service for it to work? I read somewhere that it works for whatever service you have already. So the service at colleges work just fine for it?

All you need is an internet connection, and it pretty much sets up by itself (you just plug it into your ps2 and thats it.) Other than that some games may charge to play online, but so far all games that have been released dont charge.

I can't answer exactly for the PS2 Network Adapter -- but I at least use my Dreamcast's Broadband Adapter on my university network. It has to be registered first on my network -- but otherwise, with the exception of Bomberman Online, it works great. (Bomberman Online seems to have a 95% fail rate trying to find a DHCP server, but I don't know if that's our university's network's fault or if that's the reason why BBA was never officially supported in Bomberman Online.)

Thanks for the help guys!

Are there still some Dreamcast Broadband Adapters available?

You'll see them popping on ebay once in a while, but expect to pay more than $100 bucks for it.

If you look hard enough some stores might have in stock, but your best bet is ebay.

Then I don't think I'm gonna get one then, for some reason I always feel that I'm getting ripped-off when I mess around with ebay.

I hear that Sega is abandoning all their servers anyway so it's not like you can really use the ethernet adapters for that much longer.

Hey I have one question here...
Is the US network adapter compatible with a PAL PS2?

Yeah, myself, I lucked out. Someone sold his/her Broadband Adapter to a local Software Etc., and Software Etc. has to list it -- no kidding -- for US$20. You can imagine I snapped it up really quick as soon as I saw it...

The word is that Sega's abandoning the servers come the year's end, so online multiplayer by Sega will be gone. (A shame, too... those few times that I could connect to the Bomberman On-line servers, I really enjoyed playing with other people.)

However, it doesn't stop the Dreamcast from being used as a 'net terminal. So, you can still connect to your ISP by inputting its info on the Dreamcast -- and resultedly, you can still upload and download add-ons and keys to your Dreamcast games from sites like Booyaka. That, and if you using LinuxDC (page updated just today after a long period of inactivity!) or NetBSD/dreamcast, you'll most definitely still be able to use your BBA with that -- Sega's cancellation of its multiplayer servers has nothing to do with it. ^_^

[And... if hackers can create homebrew servers for Dreamcast on-line multiplayer games, then it may not be the end of DC online multiplayer games yet. ^_^ One such programmer has so far gotten a lobby for Phantasy Star On-line to work, although it's not public yet.]

I was impressed until I realized that this is the same guy who figured out a decent amount of the gameshark PSO codes which lead to the eventual destruction of PSO.

An unofficial lobby for DC PSO!? Wow! Too bad the game gets broken because of hackers and stuff. If Sega were really cool, they should give folks the tools to set up their own DC PSO servers. The game is dying but still, people play old games all the time. I usually play NES Zelda once a year!
