"Gundam series" , posted Fri 25 Oct 08:29post reply

Gundam Wing has just started to be aired in the place where I live. I've seen some episodes and got hooked. Talking to a friend about this, I was told that "Gundam" was an old, old show that was still running in Japan. If this is true, then I have some questions that maybe any of you guys could answer or direct me to a site where I could learn more about the series. Anyway, what I want to know is:

1. Is it true that Gundam is an old show still running?

2. If the above is true, each season is storyline-related to each one, or is it a multiverse, a la "Tenchi" series?

3. Is the main character who ties each series, or are the robots (Gundams) or the political parties (earth and space), etc?

4. How long is Gundam Wing?

5. Did you like this serie?, Why, why not?

OK, that's all. Hope you can help me and thanks!

I am the least knowledgable on this subject but I try to fill in on what I know.

The fuirst Gundam series was launched back in the old days, I have been told that the Gundam series is as old as the first movie of Star Wars.

The firsts Gundam series have things in common, for example one of the main characters of the series, Amuro appears in several series, to later end his life in a movie in a dreadful fight against his arch-enemie... You can tell that Zech Marquisse is inspired on this character... Or at least that's what I think.

I'll post more info later as I have to check some txt that has it.

'Gundam' main: Amuro Rei
'Gundam 0083' main: Kou Uraki
'Z Gundam' main: Kamille Vidan (name has sereal 'interpretations' such as Camille)
'ZZ Gundam' main: ??
'Gundam F91' main: Seabook Arno (??)
'Sentinel Gundam' main: ???

... the name 'Chars counter attack' kept poping up on the text I'm reading...

As I said, I don't know much, I know not the particular order nor if the series I listed truly exist... I just copy-paste things.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam aired over 20 years ago in Japan and is the grand daddy of all big robot anime. The original series focused on the battle between Amuro Rei, a young genious who is accidentally forced into piloting the first Gundam and Char Anzabelle, a masked warrior. The story goes that in the future people start to leave the earth to live in colonies in outer space and the colony farthest from earth declares itself the principality of Zion. The Zion technically turn into "aliens" or spacenoids and declare war on earth by crashing a colony into it killing lots of people. The original series ended with the movie Char's Counter Attack, which is the final battle between Amuro and Char.

There were several more series that continued the story and the Zion keeps trying to start more wars. As it progresses, the Gundams become more advanced.

After the original Gundam storyline had been pretty much played, they decided to tap the talent of well known anime directors to create alternate universe Gundam series. That's where Gundam Wing comes in. It's done by the people who created the Ronin Warriors series and doesn't take place in the same universe as the original Gundam legacy. Wing follows the same basic plot though, the colonies turning on the earth and the enemies have an ace pilot that wears a mask and becomes the rival of the main character. Other alternate universe Gundams have been G-Gundam, which was done by the people behind Giant Robo, Gundam-X (not sure who did this)and the most current Gundam series on jap TV right now, Gundam Seed.

Also in 1999 the original director of the first Mobile Suit Gundam series directed a new Gundam series called Turn A Gundam, which takes place in the distant future from the original series. Unfortunately a badly designed Gundam and slow plot made the series very unpopular.

So there you have it, over 20 years of Gundam... TV, OAVs, and Movies. It's definitely one of the most beloved anime series of all time and will probably be around another 20 years.

I rather like the Turn A's design, most main Gundam designs since Char's Counterattack have all been pretty similiar in appearance and Syd Mead came up with something fresh. As for the plot being slow, well most Tomino series start out slow but get interesting halfway through to the end, and I thought Turn A was good.

Seed is starting to pick up, I just watched episode 3 this morning. Personally I don't care much for the character designs, but the mechas look pretty good. However it's been pretty unoriginal so far, it feels more like a modern remake of Mobile Suit Gundam rather than an alternate universe title. It starts with a young genius named Kira (Amuro) who's accidentally forced to pilot the first Gundam while his colony is attacked by the enemies Zaft (Zion) and their ace pilot that wears a metal mask (Char). An experimental ship is docked at the colony and most of the crew are killed in the initial attack, so it's up to a handful of inexperienced soldiers and civilians to pilot the ship called Archangel (White Base). Also it turns out Kira has a genetic advantage and is classified as a coordinator (new type) and has the ability to program very fastly.

So the basic premise is pretty much a clone of the original Gundam... but the designs and weapons seem to be more realistic, no beam sabers or anything like that. There's also a stronger influence on the operating system used in Mobile Suits rather than using manual controls. What makes Kira a great pilot is his computer skills... so that's an interesting angle. There's also a play on Kira's childhood friend being on the side of the enemy... copy the relationship of Char and his sister from the original series.

Only half-true. :)

Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) is the grandfather of all "war-story" driven robot anime.

Super-robots roots goes all the way back to the black-and-white days of Tetsujin 28.
Mitsuteru Yokoyama is responsible for birth of many genre, including super robots and magical girls shows. He's the "other" father of manga/anime, next to Osamu Tezuka.
