I mean when you buy a gaming mag there is at least five games that get 85% or 9/10 in the PC-sector it's even worse. Are the games really that good or are the gamers too much graphics-whores nowdays?

I tend to the second- yeah, the overall-quality is higher then ever, but when I play games like Morrowind, Jedi Knight2, UT2003 or Burnout2 I somehow find them boring. The most overrated games of 2002 yet are Jedi knight2, MoH:Frontline and UT2003 I say. The most underrated game (in non-german magazines/sites) is Gothic.
The most overrated gerne is FPS/Tactic shooter.

LOL....sorry.

Honestly, I think there's a lot of games that get overlooked. Like Luigi's Mansion. I know a lot of people that hate that game, but I borrowed it from my friend and LOVED it! Actually, I think the Nintendo GameCube is underrated, at least in the US, where the XBox continues to sell better than the GameCube. There are some games that are overrated like DOA3. The only appeal is that there are big breasted female fighters. Everything else is the same. If you have DOA2 there's no need for DOA3. Other than that I think it's been pretty fair.

Games seem to be mostly getting crap ratings in EGM issues lately, I think.

At least KOF2002 wasn't overrated in my opinion. It was a very good addition to the series.

Question: Will DOAVX be overrated?

If the game reviewer is being honest and not influenced by advertisers I don't mind if the reviews get a little too excited. Since I feel that a number of fans can be overly critical of games it's good to have a mix of opinions, no matter how varied they are.

I do agree that GCN is underrated, but I think Nintendo in general has been underrated since the N64 came out, because of the PSx. In any case, I have stuck with Nintendo as my main console and will continue to do so. In any case, I don't think that DOA3s only appeal is big breasted female fighters, as I love DoA3 and think there are improvements over DoA2 in it, but I can say that it is overrated by some, by those that are just into it for the women. I myself really love the game, and am most interested in using Ryu Hayabusa in that game. I can't wait until Ninja Gaiden comes out and I can play it... it looks great. I don't really know what games are overrated, I just play what I like, I try not to pay attention to ratings.

Yeah, when I want to know about a game, I usually ask about it here or someone else's opinion. I go to gamespot and look at the reader reviews and stuff instead of the ratings that the guys that work there give. Same goes for magazines.

I don't know about the console versions... but I found the PC versions of Jedi Knight 2 and MOHAA to be very good games, especially Jedi Knight 2. I'm not a Star Wars fanboy either, but I thought the light saber fights and force powers made the game really enjoyable and sets it apart from the standard FPS.

most of the magz are overrated and almost all the web sites.
I think the best place to see a game score would be Famitsu, I like thier grading fair almost all the time(that means not all the time!) BTW
- Dragon Quest Characters: Torneko no Daiboiken 3 - Fushigi no Dungeon (PS2, Enix): 10 / 8 / 8 / 9 (35/40)
I never thought Torneko was a good game?!?!?
that is the most shocking score for this month.

current gaming mags are shit..most of them anyway..If you 'd like to buy a mag IMO just buy it to get informed on what games come out and what's going on in the videogames industry..judge for yourself about the games..DO NOT TRUST THE MAGS!!

there is however one "mag" that sets the standard for being the most "serious" videogames mag,not just a mag about games but more of a mag for the video games industry as a whole..and that is edge(UK mag)I used to buy 3-4 mags a month but the only one I get now is Edge..for about 3.5 years..
Now as for the current games being overrated it's only natural. The video games industry has really took off in the last 5-6 years, there are a million mags out there and there are more (economical) interests to be covered as well.So it's only natural when you see all the "next-gen" mags really blowing things out of proportion every month..

there are some things I don't like though:I find some of its reviews simply outrageous(it's not the harcsh grading system that bothers me) and it does seem to favour a certain company over the others..

I haven't read a PC mag review lately, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of games are over rated.

My opinion is that most game makers spend most of their energy and resources making the 3D graphics look good.

Even life itself is overrated if you ask me... look at all the religions there are...

And Jedi Knight is a very nice FPS, the only one I've seen lately that I liked (and I'm not a SW fan).

I am a SW fan! I haven't played Jedi Knight 2, but Jedi Knight was great, so I'm pretty sure the sequel is good too, from what I've seen.

Well, yes, fanboy or not, the laser-duels were the highlight- but the whole design of levels, where you had to run trough boring places and search for half an hour (if you aint using walktroughs) for a switch and crap like that was too much. I did play the game trough, tough. as for MoH:frontline, it got allmost as good ratings as Halo- for f*cks sake, Halo (and I don't like the x-box)
was a masterpiece of gaming history, comparable to some of the better Marios, while Moh:Frontline was so heavily scripted, that when you were playing it a second time, you allmost allways knew what was going to happen.

In my oppinion, the only true next generation gameplay (inovation, not decadency) games of the new generation are Halo(x-box), Eternall Darkness (NGC) and GTA3 (PS2/PC). The rest is just better graphics- and in case of some (Mario Sunshine, MGS2) worse gameplay.

Q: How can you tell when a PS2 game is being absolutely overhyped to Alpha Centauri and back?
A: People are talking about it.

Crom, listen to me...you're never going to get any kind of objectivity about this industry. Ever. It's always going to be the tiny handful of titles that get several encyclopedias worth of coverage, while about 90% of the selection can't get the time of day.

So no matter what, you have to trust your own eyes and ears and not slavishly follow every piece of hyperbole the VG media spits out...a lot of which completely misses the point, anyway. (You think I'm kidding, right? Go read just about any Dance Dance Revolution review ever written.)

Current PS2 collection: CART Fury, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Swing Away Golf, Street Fighter EX 3, SSX (barely touched that one), Top Gear Daredevils (ditto). Complete with a Gameshark. I don't know from magazines; you shouldn't either.

I think part of the problem is you're trying to play FPS games on a console... of course it's going to suck trying to aim with a joystick. If you play Jedi Knight 2 on a PC you'd see how great it is. Beyond the single player there's a really fun multiplayer mode. Nother beats downloading a Darth Vader skin, playing on a server with nothing but light sabers, and using your force powers to toss some newbie into the pit. ;)

Im a bit late but im still going to bite.
Yes dont trust magazines, ask a friend or rent the game before buying it if you want to get an opinion before actually buying something.

Now with Morrowind, is not that the game is bad or boring, its just not for you. It requires patience, it is an rpg after all (this game is screaming for a multiplayer mode tho.)

As for Jedi Knight 2, I mainly got it for the multiplayer modes, same with the previous Jedi Knight game, they are a blast. I do agree with you that some of the levels in single player were a bit wacky (aka insane switch fetch quest and the super mario jumping levels) but all of that was made up with the story and the big battles, specially the one in the beggining were you are facing countless storm troopers and at walkers. And nothing beats force gripping an storm trooper and shaking it like a rag doll.
And Dessan is pretty cool. DINOSAUR JEDI!

Dont play fps on consoles. They will make you grumpy.

What are you talking about? JK2 is not even out yet on the consoles. I've played & beaten
it on my pc- and it does not have anything (apart from the multiplayer mode) to make me go trough a second time. And replayabillity is something you can expect at least by todays games. And wearing a Darth Wader skin makes the game no better, fanboy or not.

And as for Morrowind- this year I've beaten Dungeon Siege, Neverwinter nights & Icewind Dale2 and the only one I'm going to play a second time is Icewind dale2- not only it has the most strategical combat (which is awfully weak and unbalanced in Morrowind- you hit and hit and that's it- or play with mage which only makes the game harder but not better) but it also has a HoF-mode that aside from making the game very hard is actually rewarding- new items, new quests, new enemies and so on. My patience is better spent on some classics like Baldurs Gate or Fallout.

Current games overrated? Probably, though I can think of a few old titles that overated (By my personal taste.). It's up the player themselves to judge the games. I don't bother with reviews. If the game interest me, I'll play it. If I like it, I'll be back for more. That's the way I look at it.
