Pretty icky......

Read the story before looking at the pictures....

Some people said the pictures did not show up on their browser. These are
actually pictures of me. Shake out your clothes before putting then\m on and
check your bedsheets.

It was a quite morning at 5:00 am on May 6th, 2002 and I was lying in the
bed with my fiancée. I felt a slight tickle on my upper thigh of my left leg
under the covers and proceeded to brush it away. As my hand struck the
blanket I felt a slight stinging sensation on my leg.

I lifted the covers to see the outline of a small, brown quarter size spider
on my bed. My fiancée woke up startled and asked me "What is it?" I said,
"It looks like a spider. Hold on". I ran to the bathroom, grabbed some
tissue and quickly grabbed the spider and threw it in the toilet.

My fiancée came into the bathroom to look at the spider and all we said at
that moment was "Wow, that is a big spider". I flushed thee toilet with a
feeling of personal victory.

Almost within the hour the bite area swelled to a quarter size area. That
afternoon I went to the doctor and he asked me if it was a brown recluse. I
have never seen a brown recluse before but both my fiancée and me agreed
that it quite possibly was after hearing the description of one but I had
always thought those spiders were in southern Illinois. The doctor gave me
some antibiotics and circled the area with a marker and sent me on my way.

Later that evening a white infected area formed in the bite site. I am told
this is called the "bulls eye" and is a definite tell tale sign of a brown
recluse bite. The area around the bite site turned blue, dark red and had
gone outside of the circled area.

My fiancée took me to OSF Emergency room where they rushed me to surgery. I
spent eight days with an open cut at the bite area to drain the spiders
toxins from it and almost 24 hours a day on IV antibiotics and pain
medication.

It the end I had a 5 inch in diameter area of dead tissue, a result from the
toxins, cut out of my upper leg.

My next step in 8 days is skin grafting, which I am told is skin taken from
another part of my body and place on the cut away area.

But that area will never look the same. Never would I have thought this type
of spider was right here in Pekin or central Illinois. It seems most people
know little about this spider. If I had waited a day longer I might have
lost my leg to this spider.

IIRC, the term for that effect was something like "radiating necrotizingphitiaitis" (sp?) which is basically the flesh dying in a radiating fashion from the bite mark. Brown Recluses are brutal for that and I'm surprised and somewhat shocked that the doctor simply gave him some antibiotics and sent him home.

Then again if I were bit by anything and someone suggested a name, I'd go search that up on the internet lickety split fast...seeing 'Brown' and 'Recluse' would make me go to the OR stat.

Man... what a bad experience. I'm glad the leg's still functioning after all that.

But, well, any folks into gory special effects now have a couple more reference pictures for that area... (Sheesh -- that's the most positive I can make from the message and pictures. O_O; )

<whimpers worriedly> And people ask me why i'm arachniphobic. This is my answer.. look at those pictures. <shivers> I'm gonna have nightmares now.

Seriously.. I used to live in the midwest. I was born in Arizona. I know what sort of problem they have with spiders out there. Our house used to be INFESTED with black widows. <shdders> It's truely creepy. I feel for anyone who lives out there.

As for the Brown Recluse. I'm lucky never to have seen one on the me-side of a museum case.

Odd as it sounds, ( especially in a thread like this ) I rather like spiders. I have a tarantula, and I don't mind having spiders in my house. They keep out more bothersome insects, like silverfish (beings that I own hundreds of books, I consider silverfish my mortal enemies. )

Several days ago I was looking out my back window and I saw a spider thread desending diagonally down (diagonal on account of the wind probably) from the heights of a tree in the back yard.
A few days after that there was a large spider web, situated about 30 feet off the ground, attached between two trees. There was one chord that dropped streight down from the web, I suppose that was the same chord I has seen before.
The spider in the middle looked like a big brown fuzz ball.
The next day there was only 1 -2 threads left, assume some animal like a bird or a crazy tree climbing branch jumping squirel or cat ate the spider.

I used to live in a cabin-like house on Whidbey Island and that thing was completely infested with small spiders. One look underneath the house and you wouldn't believe the orgy of web and feeding spiders that was down there. Thankfully I don't live there any more but we do have lots of spiders in the Northwest. I just don't know how many of them are dangerous... maybe I should check. :/

In the US, only the Black Widow and Brown Recluse are considered truly dangerous.

Funny, I'm an arachnophobic but Spidey is my favorite comic character.

LOL.. Rugal you're a trip. ^_^; I like silverfish... I think they're sorta pretty. True, they devour books. And believe it or not I highly respect the spider. o_O I'm just scared of it. I love spider figurines, pictures.. one of my characters is a spider woman. (Don't ask.) I like spiders in mythology.. like Ananasi and the tree maidens that guard the Weaver. And in dice games (WOD) The Ananasi/Kumo shifters kick ass.. (I'm sure you can guess at what they shift into.)

I just get really creeped out by them and I don't even know why.

I do have a love for one type of spider, though. I swear that they are the cutest aracnids ever to walk earth. Daring Jumping spiders are the cutest darned things. (I think they're more common in warmer climates.) They're black and fuzzy with white spots here and there. They're extrememly alert and even if your shadow doesn't drift over them they still LOOK at you. (They're known for bring just that alert.) If you ever see one.. talk to it. It'll look at you. o_O But they are the best. They're of the wolfspider vareity but their venom (and they have it) is closely related to that of the brown recluse. However, they're not as powerful and usually no serious medical attention is needed (unless you're allergic to such things).

And I would keep a tarantula if it was one of those BIG fuzzy dark brown ones. They're cute too...

.... yes.. for an arachniphoic person I'm strange because there are still some spiders I like.. like two. o_O They're still sorta creepy but for some reason I like them more than the rest. Web spiders are just CREEPY!!!

But hey... my sister tells me I have a spider-like personality and behaviorisims. ^_^;

You just might like the Daring Jumping Spiders (Which I lovingly have dubbed Verthandis- named after one of the maidens that guards the Weaver of Fate and Time).

They have stumpy legs... but they're fast, fuzzy, and really cute. ^_^

That reminds me... I found a bug in my room last week. It looked kind of like a spider because the legs were long and thick with a small torso, but it only had 6 legs. At first I thought it was a spider so I tried to get a better look at it, and as I got near it the thing flew right at my face! Didn't touch me but it sure scared the hell out of me. Apparently it had some black silk wings on its back that completely blended with the body. I managed to catch it and set it loose outside but I still have no idea what the thing was...

Aww.. rugal don't be mean to them! lol..

Naw.. They probably reach that far north (to around DC). I've never seen them in NY but they're VERY common in the south (which is where i live). They're about the only spiders I like..

And I want a large tarantula... but then again.. you're talking to a girl who absolutely loves hermit crabs too. ^_^; And they gross lots of people out. But they're just one of the cutest creatues alive to me. LOL

Thank god the US only has to "worry" about 2 spiders...the Black Widow and Recluse...luckly they try to stay away from you. I'll kill them though but I need a large blunt object that gives me a safe distance between them.......that and a zippo and some hairspray LOL.

Well.. in my experience Black Widows are actually quite aggressive. Once you stumble upon their webs.. they will go right after you with no hesitation. Thus.. they are dangerous spiders because they will attack you without you knowing it if you acidentally stumble upon them.

Recluses are known for being.. well.. reclusive. And I've heard that if you run across them they indeed try to flee for their lives.

Widows are evil.. I've PERSONALLY squished them. I keep a stick at home my sister made called "The Widow Maker".

As for the av and tag.. thanks! Drew those m'self. ^_^

But hey... my sister tells me I have a spider-like personality and behaviorisims. ^_^;

I get where you're coming from. The movie Arachnophobia scares the mess outta me but I love it (actually it's the only movie that does scare me). Most little spiders I'll leave alone, even watch. When I was younger, I read through a spider book with many detailed pictures. I learned alot. I also had several nightmares...

I'm curious, what/who is this spider character you have? I have a spider character and I just have a habit of comparing.

And slugs are infinitely cooler than spiders :P

The spider character I have is Verthandi. That was where I found the name for the little black jumping spiders. My original character was one of those spiders brought to human form. (And no, she's not evil.. no more evil than any random spider would be. So she's actualy quite nice.)

Anyway.. it's taken from Norse mythology. It is said that in the Tree of Life there is the Weaver of Fate, which I just call the "Weaver". The Weaver is attended by three maidens who care for her and help her out. They're more or less goddesses/semi-goddsses. Their names are Urd (who guards the past), Verthandi (who cares for the future), and Skuld (who guards the future).

I named my character, obviously, after the maiden who cares for the present.

As for her personality. She's quite and reserved. She isn't evil and she does not attempt to suck the blood out of people. She eats people food.. as in she really loves popcorn. (It's her favorite.) She has no interest in eatting bugs in her human form. She's intelligent and a fast learner and quick witted.. afterall, I modeled her after the Daring Jumping spiders I love so much.

Physically she's very very pale (as she really hasn't gotten a chance to get a tan as a person yet) and has long, jet black hair. She also has black eyes.. and would look rather Japanese if she didn't look rather European. ;p She stands about 5'7", light build.. not exactly athletic. Infact.. she's thin and all but she doesn't have a whole lot of strength to her. She doesn't need it as a weaver. She's a seamstress by profession and hobby. She loves to weave and spin thread. (Is it any wonder?) But she doesn't keep a web. She's a homebody on a general whole.. but doesn't really mind going out to have fun.

She doesn't have an exact age.. as she'd be somewhere around 3 years old (accoring to role play time now).. but she looks to be about 22 or 23.

She wears robes, spider patterns. She loves the little critters and will pick up just about anything with 8 legs and be completely unafraid of it. Why? Because she used to be a spider and she didn't fear herself. o_O Why fear her friends?

The setting is fantasy and thus there is magic involved. She's also very good at weaving spells. Perhaps not the best actual fighter but she's an inventor of spells. Almost like a spell designer. <laughs> She's particuarly good at weaving illusions like tapestries. But she's capable of other spell crafting as well.

And that about sums up Verthandi.. what about your character?

I'll kill them though but I need a large blunt object that gives me a safe distance between them.......that and a zippo and some hairspray LOL.

You can always thrust on a large dictionary and your aiming... LoL

Small & harmless spiders are infact very profitable; they eat the eggs of fleas and other mischevious insects like those.

Quite different. I almost never use "magic" in any form in my ideas. I more of relate things to sci fi but not extreme future. I guess it would be comparable to XMen on the level and style of science and stuff.

My character is known as Hourglass but her real first name is Scarlett. She is a humanoid spider with the best of both worlds--high level though, speaking, opposable thumbs (only 3 fingers though), yet is agile, can climb walls, spin webs, has extra limbs. Though her body is of a black widow's coloration, she completely lacks poison and is rather slender. The hourglass symbol on her chest is how she breathes (note: bugs have pores on their body instead of nostrils). Hourglass is on the villains' side but isn't actually evil--she just was born to hunt and this job suits her. She rather keep away from most people though she manages to find another of her kind that she is slowly falling in love with. Hourglass has the abnormal coincidence of living in the same building as the heroes but a truce was brought about so no one attacked the other while on the grounds. The building was so massive and unexplored that neither knew of the other's existance at first. One of the heroes befriends Hourglass causing her to doubt her current position. This causes Hourglass even more confusion when the heroes save her life against a hunter bent on eating Hourglass. She slowly starts siding with the heroes in little things. At times she come "out of hiding" and cook something. Her whole world gets altered and she has the decision of what path in life she will follow.

BTW, she prefers insects but will gladly eat "normal" food and despises human flesh.
