Pretty icky......
Read the story before looking at the pictures....
Some people said the pictures did not show up on their browser. These are actually pictures of me. Shake out your clothes before putting then\m on and check your bedsheets.
It was a quite morning at 5:00 am on May 6th, 2002 and I was lying in the bed with my fiancée. I felt a slight tickle on my upper thigh of my left leg under the covers and proceeded to brush it away. As my hand struck the blanket I felt a slight stinging sensation on my leg.
I lifted the covers to see the outline of a small, brown quarter size spider on my bed. My fiancée woke up startled and asked me "What is it?" I said, "It looks like a spider. Hold on". I ran to the bathroom, grabbed some tissue and quickly grabbed the spider and threw it in the toilet.
My fiancée came into the bathroom to look at the spider and all we said at that moment was "Wow, that is a big spider". I flushed thee toilet with a feeling of personal victory.
Almost within the hour the bite area swelled to a quarter size area. That afternoon I went to the doctor and he asked me if it was a brown recluse. I have never seen a brown recluse before but both my fiancée and me agreed that it quite possibly was after hearing the description of one but I had always thought those spiders were in southern Illinois. The doctor gave me some antibiotics and circled the area with a marker and sent me on my way.
Later that evening a white infected area formed in the bite site. I am told this is called the "bulls eye" and is a definite tell tale sign of a brown recluse bite. The area around the bite site turned blue, dark red and had gone outside of the circled area.
My fiancée took me to OSF Emergency room where they rushed me to surgery. I spent eight days with an open cut at the bite area to drain the spiders toxins from it and almost 24 hours a day on IV antibiotics and pain medication.
It the end I had a 5 inch in diameter area of dead tissue, a result from the toxins, cut out of my upper leg.
My next step in 8 days is skin grafting, which I am told is skin taken from another part of my body and place on the cut away area.
But that area will never look the same. Never would I have thought this type of spider was right here in Pekin or central Illinois. It seems most people know little about this spider. If I had waited a day longer I might have lost my leg to this spider.

I get where you're coming from. The movie Arachnophobia scares the mess outta me but I love it (actually it's the only movie that does scare me). Most little spiders I'll leave alone, even watch. When I was younger, I read through a spider book with many detailed pictures. I learned alot. I also had several nightmares...
I'm curious, what/who is this spider character you have? I have a spider character and I just have a habit of comparing.
And slugs are infinitely cooler than spiders :P
The spider character I have is Verthandi. That was where I found the name for the little black jumping spiders. My original character was one of those spiders brought to human form. (And no, she's not evil.. no more evil than any random spider would be. So she's actualy quite nice.)
Anyway.. it's taken from Norse mythology. It is said that in the Tree of Life there is the Weaver of Fate, which I just call the "Weaver". The Weaver is attended by three maidens who care for her and help her out. They're more or less goddesses/semi-goddsses. Their names are Urd (who guards the past), Verthandi (who cares for the future), and Skuld (who guards the future).
I named my character, obviously, after the maiden who cares for the present.
As for her personality. She's quite and reserved. She isn't evil and she does not attempt to suck the blood out of people. She eats people food.. as in she really loves popcorn. (It's her favorite.) She has no interest in eatting bugs in her human form. She's intelligent and a fast learner and quick witted.. afterall, I modeled her after the Daring Jumping spiders I love so much.
Physically she's very very pale (as she really hasn't gotten a chance to get a tan as a person yet) and has long, jet black hair. She also has black eyes.. and would look rather Japanese if she didn't look rather European. ;p She stands about 5'7", light build.. not exactly athletic. Infact.. she's thin and all but she doesn't have a whole lot of strength to her. She doesn't need it as a weaver. She's a seamstress by profession and hobby. She loves to weave and spin thread. (Is it any wonder?) But she doesn't keep a web. She's a homebody on a general whole.. but doesn't really mind going out to have fun.
She doesn't have an exact age.. as she'd be somewhere around 3 years old (accoring to role play time now).. but she looks to be about 22 or 23.
She wears robes, spider patterns. She loves the little critters and will pick up just about anything with 8 legs and be completely unafraid of it. Why? Because she used to be a spider and she didn't fear herself. o_O Why fear her friends?
The setting is fantasy and thus there is magic involved. She's also very good at weaving spells. Perhaps not the best actual fighter but she's an inventor of spells. Almost like a spell designer. <laughs> She's particuarly good at weaving illusions like tapestries. But she's capable of other spell crafting as well.
And that about sums up Verthandi.. what about your character?
