Modchips for PS2 are iffy. I've heard that some of the more recent games won't work with the same modchips that work for older ones. That's partly why I haven't bothered to get one yet.
A Japanese PS2 works best, really...
That's the route I'll eventually take. Funny how Sony and MicroScheiss (blast, can't make an Eszett on this board) are so anal about import playing. It's actually pretty easy to make a pirated PS2 game (just getting it to be recognized on the system is a problem), but imports are hellacious to get to work. On the other hand, Sega's systems were easy to modify for import game playing, but copying their games was almost impossible (I hear that Dreamcast games finally got burned towards the end of the run, but even then...)! Same with Nintendo (really, where are you going to find discs the size of GC disks)? Their secret: varied data-compression schemes that are probably proprietary (but it isn't like Sony and MicroScheiss couldn't do something just like that).
So when Sony and MicroScheiss go after "piracy", I'm really wondering what they're going after. To keep video game markets segregated perhaps? Even though not too many people bother spending the money for import games -- but probably just enough for business that deal in their sales to exist in droves, the majority aren't going to deal with text they can't read and stories they can't decipher. Some of us, like me, actually have the option of the opposite.
And then, others, just don't give a crap. They just want to play their game now. Still, they aren't the significant market.
I tell you what, it's a classic case of El Asso Wipo Economics!

Ok, what I dont' get is this. You could buy a car and mod it, it is not against the law. You could buy a BB gun and mod it, it would not be the fault of the person who sold you the gun. So, what does MS have to go after the guy and even shut him down?
Because his mod chips have the potential allow Xbox & PS2 to play pirated games? Well, if that is the logic behind this, we should not be able to buy knives, guns, or anything else that has the potential to perform illegal tasks.
To me, it is more like this. Once I piad the money, this item is mine. Sony nor MS and not even my mohter has the right to intervere. So, what makes the person who provides the tools for people who have the right to mod their system guilty?
That I really want to know....

Do you think I give a damn about what you have to say?

I would assume the reason that a Company who sells things would want to shut down a Company who sells something that allows them to rip off the company that sells things would be so that they don't get ripped off and can sell more.
Not because your performing Illegal activities but because they're losing money if you do.
If you stab somebody with a knife. =P No corporation loses money, so why would any corporation go after that?
They're just protecting their own self interests. Which would be logical.
I wonder if they'd go after a mod chip that took off the territory protection but left in the copyright... I import things myself, but I don't like piraters.
