But not a wacky Treasure story, sadly.

Somehow, though -- I doubt a wacky Treasure-style story would fit the game, though. ;)

Still... what kinds of wacky stories could folks here think of to fit the game?

It has a touching and sad story, and it fits well with the game.
Admittedly, it's one of the better shooter storylines I've ever had the chance to experience.

I have to agree with that. I wonder if the GC version will use FMVs, or any other way to tell the story. I still haven't seen a shooter that blends gameplay with the story correctly, besides maybe the japanese Ace Combat 3.

Haha, most shooter stories are along the lines of: lone last fighter out to destroy evil empire :)

Hmm... Thunderforce V for the Playstation had some ok story, but I can't remember exactly. Feel like replaying the game later; plus someone in this BBS (can't remember!) has the Thunderforce V female pilot as his avatar...
[edit]
Gen has the Thunderforce V pilot avatar ^^

Gunbird II had some silly story about some potions?

Twinkle Star Sprites had a bizzare story, but I think it worked :)
Funny story for a cute shooter / puzzle game.

Gigawing II had multiple endings, but since I have the Japanese version, I don't really understand the story.

Radiant Silvergun has some nice anime FMVs. But again, I don't know what's the story about.

Haha, any other games anyone would like to bring up?

-Bangai-O's wacky dialogues can be considered a storyline?

-Also, the last level of Einhänder has some storyline surprises, too.

-Omega Boost has one of the cheesiest storylines ever. Somebody saw Terminator and didn't got it right.

-Gigawing 2... I have the japanese game too so I don't know... God I love that game.

-Tales of Phantasia is a nice shooter with an RPG minigame... Oh! it's the other way around. I just played that damn minigame too much lately.

I played the US version of Gigawing II and I *still* don't understand the story, which somehow makes the game more enjoyable.

Well, there is nothing to be crazy about, but there is a storyline.
The Darius series has a super scenario : Fish are evil! (and G. Darius had surrealistic endings too... "you will see the begenning of life" ?)

I already mentioned that in another thread a couple days ago
You don't read all the threads do you?I'm telling the professor!

seriusly now,the story is perfect for a shooter..you can't/shouldn't make a shooter with a complex story unless you want to put in the game dialogue and cut scenes..for a 'classic' shooter like Ikaruga it is how it should be.

"Radiant Silvergun's story" , posted Tue 17 Sep 15:10post reply

I don't remember all the details, but Radiant Silvergun did have a serious story. It was just that the Anime Intros and in-game cut scenes were sometimes a little bit silly.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! BE ATTITUDE FOR GAINS!
---------

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
In the future, scientists find the remains of a Creator robot in some ruins, but they are over a million years old. Aboard the Tetra, Radiant Silvergun pilots, Baster, Reanna and the UN Chief's son (I forget his name) are listening to the UN Chief's explanation of what they found. The Tetra's creator robot looks at the ruined Creator and wonders. Meanwhile, scientists are fooling around with a crystal they dound with the ancient Creator robot, and they start a chain reaction that has very catastrophic side effects.

(NOTE):Here is where the game starts. I am going by the timeline of the game. Note that the game doesn't progress in a logical order. It goes from Stage 3 to Stage 2, then to 4, 5, 6, and then 1. At the end of stage 4, the Creator robot abandons ship for some reason. I, however, am going to start with stage 2, since that is the logical beginning of the story.

Stage 2: After the immediate catastrophie, the Tetra heads down to earth and the 3 RS ships deploy. They find the defense system on the fritz. It turns out that the mysterious crystal is causing it all. When they reach the command tower, the UN commander tells the Tetra to evacuate, and that all is lost.

Stage 3-6: Tetra returns to Earth, and the RS pilots battle through a mechanized planet. When they reach the command tower, the Tetra is destroyed by a massive laser, leaving Baster and Reanna to continue the fight alone. They soar through an orbital launch platoform before encountering the crystal again, which transforms into a massive crystalline being called XIGA. They destroy XIGA, and in the process are warped million of years in the past.

Stage 1: Baster and Reanna are now face to face with the dying crystal. The crystal detonates, killing Baster and Reanna.

ENDING: Somehow, the Tetra and the Creator robot get warped into the past as well. Creator, using hair samples, clones Baster and Reanna, and right before he dies, the clones awaken: Adam and Eve. And the cycle begins again.

End of Spoiler
