quote: Hey fist of N is a movie!
Hokuto no Ken (aka, Fist of the North Star) was originally a manga, then a 152-episode TV anime series that ran from 1984-1987, as well as a theatrical anime film. And, of course, who could forget the altogether-forgettable American-made live-action Fist of the North Star movie.... I've recently seen some photos from what appears to be a Korean FotNS movie... perhaps someone else could enlighten us, as I have no other info on this flick.
For someone who sounds like they think "it's only anime if it's gory and has lots of blood," you seem to have missed out on one of the longest-running, genre-defining anime in the history of the industry. If it weren't for early explorations of hyper-violence such as FotNS, you fans of Haou Ninpouchou (aka, Ninja Scroll) might not have your favorite film (or perhaps only a less violent, watered-down version).
Anyway, back to the topic at hand: Koukaku Kidoutai STAND ALONE COMPLEX (aka, Ghost in the Shell STAND ALONE COMPLEX).
Let me put the fears of a toned-down, less violent, less risque GITS to rest. Yes, STAND ALONE COMPLEX is airing on Japanese TV. But it's not on regular, broadcast television (if it were, one might have cause for concern about the show losing some, shall we say, "intensity"?). It's not even being shown on one of the Japanese cable channels (which are running more and more anime every week, with many of them under less stringent content guidelines; many running in late-night time slots with even fewer restrictions). No, according to the text shown at the end of the trailer that sabo10 thoughtfully linked to, GITS:SAC is running on SKY PerfecTV! -- a Japanese pay-per-view (PPV) channel (a satellite PPV channel, if memory serves). This should put the series under even fewer content restrictions than a series on Japanese broadcast or cable television.
I, for one, am glad to see an anime TV series being placed on a PPV channel. If more anime series were broadcast this way, perhaps it might serve to at least slow the deluge of the piratical, digital distribution of anime on the net (which has led to even more activity on the part of the producers of bootleg Hong Kong DVD sets and VCDs). If the majority of digital anime downloaders were downloading solely to "try before they buy," ultimately paying the creators something for their hard work, I wouldn't be so down on digital distribution. But in the last year-and-a-half of working anime conventions as a retailer of Region 2 Japanese DVDs, I've met far too many self-proclaimed "fans" that see nothing wrong with downloading their favorite series for free, and then never buying a licensed copy of it to help support its creators. I'm not saying all digital anime downloaders are like this -- just that far too many of them are.
By the way, for those interested in the DVD release of GITS:SAC, here's the release info for the first volume of the series on Region 2 DVD:
