There are waaaaay too many whinny threads about KoF2k2, it's rather upseting...
so I'm just going to rant about why I don't really hate the game...
If there's one thing I learned from my "Ideal SvC cast" thread, is even when given complete fan control, you can NEVER get a true "dreammatch"... You spend hours of your day counting votes and when you reveal the results you get "Terry and Ryu number one [storms out]" with limited space and not everyone liking exactly who you like there's a slim to nill chance of you getting a "perfect" game, EVER
I'm sure Eolith counted every vote from the contest... why else would Billy and Yamazaki return and Bao be thrown away? But why are so many 'favorites' missing?
Truth be told, I don't really think Eiji could earn enough votes to get into the top 3... I *think* I voted for him, it was him or Geese I think, but that's just because I liked the 95 Yagami team... I honestly always made him last in the team and let Billy and Iori do all the work... and if they had strikers back then he wouldn't have even gotten a second of fight time...
I'm stumped as to why Boss team was omitted... my best guess is the three "vote in" winners were Billy, Yamazaki, and Shermie or something and the rest was just Eolith making teams as best they could...
as far as King... how many of you think King looks like Ellen? Show of hands, come on... okay, now pretend you're an idiot 13 year old boy... are you going to vote out the lady who looks like a man, despite her insane skill with Muay Thai? Probably, and there are waaaaay too many idiot 13 year olds on the internet to not have gotten King voted out... but I'm certain she'll be back, she's a very important character, like Goro and Heidern, she'll be back when her team needs help...
speaking of May-Lee bumping out King... let May have her time in the sun! Now that Playmore's getting control of KoF back, the Korean team isn't going to get as much loving care, so it'll probably be just Kim, Chang, and Choi from here on out with her and Jhun watching with Jae Hoon and Dong Hwan in their background...
and there are 6 Orochi characters (9 counting EX) in the game, true... but there are 10 from the NESTS Saga too... I like to look at this game as "Orochi Vs NESTS" and I'm sure the next DM will be like a "Orochi Vs NESTS Vs [new villians]" game!
so in closing, I guess I sort of expected this to happen, I bitched and moaned enough back in 98 that Boss Team, Goenitz, and Eiji were gone... it all seems like a moot point now, I know they're never coming back... maybe that's why I don't care... I'm busy collecting every KoF character for Mugen, so soon enough all I have my true DM, one in which Eiji can beat up Bao and Moe and Geese can co-exist without massive amounts of sucking. KoF2k2 is a nice little "offical" attempt at a DM, so I'll try it and probably enjoy it... if for nothing else I'll buy it just for completeness of my collection and those wacky sprite 'bloopers' during the credits!
EDIT: WAIT!!! Why are we all blaming May-Lee for King's removal anyway? Yuri abandoned the ladies team to be with her brother and boyfriend, then in 2000 she thought she could just walts right back in, then switch back in 2k1... I bet Yuri tricked King! she was probably all "No, seriously King! I'll joing Mai and May... wow! there names are almost the same! KEEN!... on the lady team and you can team with Ryo and Robert!"
later that day: Takuma says to King "What? You're going to be on this team? I'm sorry, but like I told Yuri I'm taking the third spot... better luck next year, future-mother-of-my-grandchildren". King then yelled "I'm gonna F**king kill you Yuri!!!" but by then it was too late, that bitch Yuri had boarded her flight to her first match and King was left out...
the Moral: Don't blame May-Lee, it's all Yuri's fault! She sucks! Go away Yuri!

Ya know, if this was an offical storyline game I'd have no problem with the roster lineup, even with King being gone. I figure they'd want to spice things up, and getting rid of some old favorite for a time to get in new blood isn't a bad idea.
But this is a dream match, and dang it you don't take a character that's been in EVERY KOF out of a so called Dream Match. It just doesn't make sense...And that's why I'm a bit upset and cycnical about the game quality...
But yet again, I'm also looking forward to playing the game in the arcade, just for some of the new team matchups. There is enough there for me to play and have fun with (I just probably won't buy the home port of this game...)
Counter Edit : I don't blame May Lee for King being gone, myself. In fact I'm quite afraid she's going to take alot of heat for King being gone, heat she doesn't deserve. She's a good character, and I like having her in 2k2. I just want King too...:)
And take that back about Yuri! She'd want King on the team, not some Justice hero which is going to stop her slow turn to the Dark side of Hadou...(It's going to happen...She picked up the Son Goku Satsu, now she just needs to take a few of Rugal's moves and then she'll become the true Villian of KOF....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!)
PS - This Counter Edit is under a heavy does of Coffee, so take it with a grain of salt...

quote: Heh. I like your little joke about Yuri and King...
But seriously, a lot of things they are doing does not make sense. Why have 4 Kyokugen members and taking out King who has a different style from them? If they are going to weaken Takuma, they might as well take him out and let King has her spot.
Billy and Yamazaki being in a dream match is hardly a surprise, since 97 team is based on popularity voting from fans - they even revealed the number of votes they each received. But I was surprised that Geese being left out. Even Capcom is not stupid enough to leave him out in CVS...Probably they couldn't fit him anywhere and left him out quietly...I am sure if they DO count the votes he would be in the top 5 spots, and now there are 7 who return?
At the end of my whining, YES I DO appreciate the things Eolith has done in putting a KOF in place every year without fail. I am so glad there is a new KOF coming up to replace 2K1, and no more strikers...YES I look at the bright side of things too.
At times I understand Eolith's positions... with limited amount of memory space, how are they gonna squeeze in so many characters. Cracking their brain on this is tough enough. Move with the times man, you dun see characters repeating themselves all over again in the series. Some have to go eventually, maybe they will come back in KOF 2003. Remember, Yashiro, Chris and Shermie would have a part to play when the story continues in 2003, so Eolith is like giving them a chance to come back and bum around for a year, coz for the next 3 years(2003-2005), they wouldn't be around, so King is like taking a break, so is Lin and Bao.
Well... looks like I can form my team of K9999, Vice and Mature! Woohoo!
 K9999!!!

Have the results been released yet for the voting? because without seeing them, here's the best I can guess as to why Boss team wasn't included:
Obviously Billy and Yamazaki were voted back in, and I have a feeling an Orochi/New Face Member was the third spot... so Billy, Yamazaki, and Blue Mary reformed their cool yet storyline ridiculous team from 97 and the other 2 Orochis joined the winning one to form a complete team... Mature and Vice probably didn't rank in the top 3, though I think they might count as "favorites", but since there's no solo-enters, Iori's 96/98 team reformed...
that's the only reasonable away I can explain why Geese isn't back... he probably ranked 4 in the voting with all our luck -__- SIGH, with Rugal being perminate boss in Dreammatches, I wager Geese will be perminate boss in "sh*tty GBA games that take place during Dreammatch years" which ironically, is worse then if he really was dead.
Well even if that's not right, we can assume Billy and the Orochis ranked high in the voting... and come to think of it "Billy and the Orochis" would be a sweat ass name for a band! I have no musical talent, so I'll just need to kidnap some SNK exces and real muscians and form said band as a cartoon group, a la Gorillaz... oh sorry, back on topic... if Billy and the Orochis were the vote ins, who were the vote outs?
Obviously Bao... but with Lin, Hinako, and King missing too I'm wondering who were the other two...
probably not Chang and Choi, because well, if one of them was a weak link BAM!!! Korean Team would have been Kim, Jhun, and May-Lee in a flash....
Lin seems pretty popular, given the rumors people probably weren't voting him out because they wanted to see him fight Ron/Long
And Hinako... do they make toys of unpopular characters? because I bought this insanely cute little 'gumball machine' Hinako figure, so if she got to be made into a toy with Iori, Kyo, Mai, Athena, and Shiki (they came in a badass set! The Kyo and Iori can be posed to look like they're walking arm in arm!) she can't be hated can she?
and yeah, I know I said moron kids probably voted King because she "looks like a man/dyke" but realistically, wouldn't just as many moron kids like her because she was over powered in CvS1? King's removal is an enigma to me... she's popular, but morons can easily dismiss her on looks... did Eolith trust the morons? or did they just go, "Okay, May and Mai's names sort of look the same when writen in Romanized letters...so they're the lady team... and Yuri is less fun to play as then King, so she'll be third... there team solved!"
Note:Baghead's very tired and has just been ranting. He'll probably wake up tomorrow morning and wonder what the Hell he just wrote like everyone else will...

when i first logged onto the internet earlier, i checked another board first and saw the rampant replies about kof 2002, complaints a lot harsher than the ones here. people just bashing left and right. only one person defending the game and he happened to be admin, so everyone sucked up to him afterwards. anyways, it angered me. i was pretty pissed myself, judging off of others' replies. then i came here, saw literally dozens of replies about how crappy the game was gonna be. it pissed me off even more. i didn't even read half of your complaints because they were all the same. i felt even more disappointed about what kof has turned into
then i checked the "sum up" that Professor did here http://www.planetps2.com/mmcafe/soup_08-24b-02.html and there's nothing but good things about the game (except for Mature being slower. but you know how that goes. a character slows down, they most likely improved something else). now, i really dunno why people are complaining about this game. for me, my only complaints are the missing Boss team, Rugal back in another dreammatch, and King being left out. but you know, whatever, you can't have everything you want. i'm very happy with the outlook of this game. so many great characters that i've wanted to team together, i can FINALLY do so! and there's so many good changes too. someone here said it was human nature to complain first then be happy later ..... well human nature's really annoying @_@
anyways, TheBeast, i don't see them as weakening Takuma i see them as changing him, maybe for the better! he's got Marco's flying kick move now, which means i won't get my ass beaten after flying at the blocking enemy. sure, i can't juggle that into his zanretsuken, but there's another move for juggling now. even though his haohshikohken doesn't travel, it causes a wire effect i will have LOTS of fun with that

Interesting post, Triple J! Sorry for all the whining that pisses you off...^_^
I suppose this would be better if Eolith had "behaved" something like, "Look, you morons! I hereby announce KOF2002 to be a dream match because I want it to be so. I am going to bring back this, this ,this....and I am going to eliminate this, this, this...and so the whole KOF2002 will be what we developers want it to be. Play it if you want. We don't give a damn."
But they had sort of hyped/lifted our hopes of a good KOF this year, given the fact that they did not really do a good job for KOF2001 and want to "redeem" themselves this year. They said they would listen to KOF fans, had this vote thing, promised new sprites, promised game balance...of how many of these actually came true, we will have to wait for the final product.
Of course, as I mentioned in another thread, "To whine is human", especially when desires and expectations did not fall into place.

Izek: hehe, yea, Geese is a drug. bring him out for the dreammatches or don't bring him out at all
TheBeast: haha, no worries. the truth is, i was gonna start a "complaint thread" myself. then i read Prof's sum up and it eased things a lot for me
now, i can't wait to see what they've done to a lot of the characters! the new poses, the sprites updated to 2k2 style, Nona's art of the older characters .. yes, i was one of the few who liked 2k1's art -_- although, the artist made a lot of the characters look goofy and weird in 2001. maybe this year, after hearing fans' opinions, Nona changed his art towards a different direction
anyways, they picked some of the best songs for the teams this year! 2001's music was great imo, but it didn't have the feel of a kof. i'm still hoping those old artists will come back for future kofs. maybe mix the old with the new? that'd be perfect to me

I'm actually curious how these modified custom combos (POWERMAX) are going to work. Just see it....do Andy's hcf+p three times then end with his cho reppa dan or something.
Or Kyo's qcf+C,hcb+C cancel qcf+c, hcb+c, cancel qcf+c, hcb+c cancel qcf+D,D, qcb,hcf+P
(though, I wonder if that would be possible or it would just recognize a f+C and finish the chain instead of cancelling)
Well...least that's how the system sounds like it plays...
Overall I'm very excited about this game, and I'm not getting that "eewww.. this isn't right" feeling like I did from 2k and 2k1. Most likely the due to the elimination of strikers.
The only complaint so far I have is the loss of King, Shingo(?) and the absence of Geese. But I can't complain much since the New Face team is back (with their orochi counterparts... yay Orochi Yashiro) along with Vice, Mature, and Yamazaki.
But like Baghead said, let may lee shine for awhile. King has been in every KOF up until now and probably needs a rest...but I guess that doesn't work either since there's no storyline.
