I finished up the game months ago but only now finally got around to writing up a few poorly scribbled notes detailing my impressions. Normally I would consider that laziness on my part but MGS2 seems to generate a sense of ennui even when it comes to discussing the game.
Yeah, I have to agree with you. MGS2 was such a hodge-podge of uncompleted ideas with various "what the hell?" moments sprinkled throughout. I mean, did we REALLY have to know that Otacon had an affair with his step-mom or that his stepsister was in love with him? And the whole Vamp being immortal thing was never explained at all and just came off stupid.
The entire end was so anti-climactic I would have felt cheated if I wasn't playing my roommate's copy. It seemed like Kojima was trying to make some grand philosophical statement but he was so stretched thin with his various "Nukes are bad," "We can all make a difference," and his entire videogame allegory points that it never came together. It didn't help that some of the end was cut out due to 911 but right after Raiden's nude scene, everything became so disjointed it was hard to tell who was real, who wasn't and when they were. It's hard to care about characters that are fictitious even within a fictitious environment.
I have to admit I did like viewing Snake though the eyes of Raiden which was a clever dynamic. I just hope that next time around, Konami decides to ditch the whole 101 psychology class crap and make a plot that doesn't spawn an idiotic 1000 post topic on IGN about what the hell was happening throughout the game.
I really liked MGS2. I liked the story and everything. I just think it could have ended a LOT better than it did. I didn't like what happened with the Colonel. I thought that was so stupid! I kinda didn't like Raiden, but as the game went on I wanted to know more about his past and when I found out it was kinda cool. I didn't like not playing as Snake, but as long as he was in the game and doing something it was OK with me. It was a little hard at first, but it was cool later. I liked Otacon, the affair thing, I thought, added a little more to his character. We all knew he was desperate for love since MGS1 and I suppose the thing with his mother is how he got that way. I thought it was pretty cool and after Emma died he got all tough....after he broke down.
Basically, playing it was like watching a movie. Just like the first game, but this time it wasn't really straight-forward to the point like the first game, there were a few twists. Yes, there are some plot-holes in this game, but that's what keeps you coming back for sequels. Kojima knew what he was doing. I bet we'll all go out and rent, borrow, or buy the next Metal Gear game (not Substance, even though I am because I don't have MGS2).
