Before I begin, please make sure you are agreeing to the rules that owning a rom without having the actual cart is illegal. The reason why I am posting this is to generate a fun and exciting online play of king of fighters 2001, that we may be able to host tournaments and such hopefully.
First of all, this online step guide is for Mame32k, not Kawaks. Mame32k allows for 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 battles, and Kawaks seem to desync too much. If you need to get the latest Mame32k, download here:
pentium version- Pentium Mame32k
amd version- AMD Mame32k
For the people who do not have the kof2k1 rom, its going to be hard to find it, since sites taken down their download links to kof2k1. Have a friend send it to you.
For the people that do have the kof2k1 rom, please check to make sure you have the latest p1, p2, and m1 rom. If you do not have them, I can send them to you by AIM. (they are relatively small files, p1=1 meg, p2= 4meg, and m1=128k). I will upload them later for faster download.
Ok here we go! :)
Rename kof2k1 rom so that it is exactly like this = kof2k1b.zip (It should be around 40megs, hopefully). Place this rom in the roms folder of mame32k. (When u extract mame32k, it should automatically create a roms folder, if not, just make one).
After that is finished, go to your ini folder, and open up the games.ini (Use notepad to open it) Scroll down all the way to the bottom, until you see these 3:
[kof2k1b] PlayCount=58 HasRoms=1 HasSamples=1 Favorite=1 AutofireDelay=1
[kof2001b] PlayCount=389 HasRoms=1 HasSamples=1 Favorite=1 AutofireDelay=1
[kof2001_8p] PlayCount=198 HasRoms=1 HasSamples=1 Favorite=1 AutofireDelay=1
If yours look exactly like the ones above, theres no need to change them. (Make sure the Favorties for all 3 of them are set to 1, not 0).
Now open up the mame32k program. Go to options / directories. On the "show directories for": make sure it is on ROMs. Now delete any directories that is in the box under it (you cannot delete the "< >") Then, click on browse, and go to the folder where you placed kof2k1 in, which should be the "roms" folder in mame32k. When you did all that, press ok to confirm the changes.
Now go to options / default options. Click on rendering. We will now increase the viewing size of mame32k permamently in order to reduce eye strain. :)
There are 2 different kinds that I prefer that you use. If your computer is fast, check on 2x scale. This gives the games a great smooth look (Its actually 2xsai for Kawaks users). If your computer cannot handle this, then click on hardware stretch, and use Stretch 2x. Everything else should be unchecked, other than the gray checkmarked "wait vsync"
For sound, I use Directsound (default), at 48000 sample rate. Personally, its up to you.
If you use a gamepad, go to Controllers, and click both "use joystick" and "use directinput" under the Joystick section. If you use keyboard, (yes, there are awesome players I know who use keyboard!!), then leave it blank.
In miscellaneous, only "use background artwork", "enable game cheats", and "auto-pause" should be checked.
Everything else should be left alone.
Whew! That was fun wasn't it? :) After all that is completed, press Ok to confirm the changes. You should be back in the Mame32k program now. On the left, you will see a bunch of folders. Go to custom / favorites and press the F5 key. (The F5 key refreshes to see if you added new games, and will appear on the right.) You should see 3 games appear now. "Buggy edition", "Eight Man", and "Illegal Piece of S***" (Yes, these are the names for kof2k1. The author had fun making these names I guess :)
Here is a brief description of the following games:
Buggy edition- the standarized game that is used for 1on1s. And its not buggy :)
Eight Man- this one is for 2on2s, 3on3s, and 4on4s
Illegal piece of S***- this is the same as buggy edition. Most people just use buggy edition though.
Ok, after you see the 3 games and such, click on the Heart icon box (It is next to the IME icon). This Heart icon box allows you to play games under the custom / favorites folder online. If you have any other games that are not under the custom / favorties folder and you wish to play them online, uncheck the heart icon box.
Here is a picture to show you how everything should look like when u are done:
Example
Congrats! You just finished the emeraldazn's online step guide! To play online, go to file / play network game. There you will see a list of servers, its best to join the one you have the lowest ping with. Under connection type, it depends. Excellent is used for 1on1s and maybe 2on2s, while the rest should be used with Good connection. Also, there are some servers that do not allow excellent connection, so take note.
When you actually start playing the game, press tab during the game, and you will see a menu, go to input (this game), and configure according to the way it best suits you.
Well, I believe that takes care of everything. If you wish to make a test run, you can e-mail me at res03res@gte.net and schedule a game, or AIM me at ghhx5.
For anyone that is interested in the characters I use :) Lin, Ryo, Yuri, Takuma, Hinako, Seth, XiangFei, Foxy

Thanks very much, it took me quite some time to do this :)
1. Yes, you do not need to download another kof2k1 rom to use it on Mame32k. Be sure you rename it to kof2k1b.zip when you play though. If you still wish to play kof2k1 on kawaks, I would say just make a copy, rename that as kof2k1b.zip, and put that in the roms folder of mame32k
2. This is kinda confusing at first, but it will be easy to understand. King of Fighters 2001 let you use up to 4 chars to play with. Mame32k lets you have up to 8 players for kof2k1, 4 being on one side, and 4 being on the other side. Each picks a character, making it a continuous 4on4. (The only problem with that is only 1 super meter for every game, however you can make some of the characters into strikers, which will make the striker players watch the game instead of playing). Oh by the way, the last player on each team decides the character order and strikers.
For 2on2, there are a total of 4 players, 2 being on one side and 2 on the other. Each player picks 2 characters. Usually each player do 1 char and 1 striker, making it a 2on2.
Same goes with 3on3 (3 people on each side= 3 characters and 1 striker usually) and 3on2 (I forgot to mention that as well, you can still play even if you have 5 players!) 3 players on one side, 2 players on other
I hope this helps :)

Thanks for the help...
I think I kinda confused with the 2nd question...I understand how KOF2001 works..What I meant is that you said,"First of all, this online step guide is for Mame32k, not Kawaks. Mame32k allows for 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 battles, and Kawaks seem to desync too much." Kawaks allow such battles too, and the desync problem has been bugging Kawaks for a long time before KOF2001.
Another problem of Mame32 is that loading of the games take too long, and the roms are harder to find than kawaks? I haven't tried Mame32, but thats wat my friend said.

loading takes long if your rom set is not encrypted (same goes with kawaks)
kawaks can only allow 2 people to play. but mame32k, u can have up to 8 people play.
roms work both for kawaks and mame32k, theres no difference. the p1, p2, and m1 files are updates for kof2k1, m1= music, p1 and p2= voices, graphic fixes
