Heres my random rant of the day @_@ why is it that movie theaters, while getting larger, comfier and more spacious, are becoming more expensive? Ok that makes sense, for quality you must fork out the cash right? Well what is jabbing me lately is how you spend 6-8 dollars on a movie, 3 bucks on a drink and 5 bucks on a large popcorn, you sit down to enjoy your show, AND THEY SHOW YOU FRIGGIN ADVERTISEMENTS! I just bought my big Coke, now I have to see them advertise it for me, even though I just paid for it, and I also paid for this ticket which, in my view, should guarantee me an ad-free experience, I mean you pay extra for premium channels on Cable TV like Starz! and you don't get commercials on those. I swear, in many ways you are getting less for more today in society.

I'm a cheap skate, I go to the movies in the middle of the day and get in for $5.50.

But what do you mean by ads? Do you mean when you sit down and they have godawful ads for local business? and "Coke presents: Twisted Trivia" such as "Guess the star who was in Spider-man: yoTb cMuGieer"? I think those aren't really meant to push products so much as give something to confirm the screen works when you walk in and find a seat... and those new fangled CGI "Let's go out to loby" remakes (maybe no Let's go out to the loby, but something in the same vein) is sort of just there so people can have time to finish a sentence and take a last minute seat without missing anything (except the space ship with the theaters logo missing the delicious Pepsi moon only it a popcorn comet)

If you mean trailers... who doesn't love trailers?

Has anyone ever really bought a product they saw in a theater ad?

No, he probably means actualy real honest to goodness commerical ads. I've seen them at one of my local theaters too before the start up on the trailers, and they're pretty annoying (mostly cause they're blown up to such a huge resolution they can't help but look ugly...they weren't filmed to be shown at that size).

Trailers, though, can often be the best part of some movie going experiences...(Sometimes a trailer is just more fun than the movie itself...:)

I've only seen the commercials in really big cities. When I was living in California recently, they were all over the place. But since I've been back in Arizona, nada. I also catch the early matinees in addition to frequenting the cheap theatre. I urge you to find out if your locale has a chea theater, they're the bomb diggity.

I generally go around 4:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. That's about the latest you can get the affordable matinee prices and not have to skip out on work or school. Plus I've gotten into the habit of going into the theater about 15 minutes late. That way I skip the obnoxious ads and I hate previews with a passion since most of the movies advertised I'll never see anyway.

The only commercials I've seen, the ones right before the movie, are ones that were made for the theater and they only show one commercial if they do. It doesn't bother me, it's not like they are showing it in the middle of the movie. That would suck. The movies are advertising products enough by theirselves. See how many advertisements you can spot in "Minority Report!"

The money you pay for tickets all goes straight to the film company themselves. The theater only makes a very, very, very small profit, if any, on tickets sold. The reason concessions are so bloody expensive, is because that is where the theater gets all their moneys.

So, you can blame retrdedly high ticket prices on retardedly greedy film companies.

Bring your own drink rather than being ripped-off there. We've got an excellent cinema called the Cornerhouse here in Manchester where they screen independent and foreign films, as well as this big, fuck-off hi-tech cinema called the Filmworks where they show the typical big-budget films. I saw 24-hour Party People at the Cornerhouse today, top film about the hascienda. And Wolf, you're right about Minority Report. I seem to remember Guiness, Pepsi and Nokia cashing in. I'm pretty sure there were lots more too.

Their prices are too rediculous the rest of the time so I only go to matinee and bring my own food/drink.

I could also do with out screaming babies, gang bangers, ass holes, people who talk loud through out the movie, people who bring noise making devices into the theater like celphone and pager without even turing the ringgers off, people who talk on celphones durring the show, 'art houses' that smell like piss, and movie theaters that don't care about giving you service and put no effort into stopping these things.
Those guys get a:

Too add to that. remember when pissing off people with laser pointers was "cool"? I am happy that fad passed over. And theathers with arcades seem to get the rarest and weirdest games at the same time. A harkins near my house is th only place with Jumbo Safari. A While ago is had DDR 3rd Mix Korean version but replaced it for Ms. Pacman.

Wakala! there's another one laser pointers! I'm also glad that little fad is over.
They get a:
then + then

I think people stopped selling laser pointers because of complaints because of all the mis-use.

Yeah, movie theater arcades can get a mix of the most popular stuff and obscure ones.

Ooooooh! I've never seen a real commerical when I went to the movies... maybe they think the Army has better people to try to convince to be in their Army of One then someone who spends only about $11 at the theater instead of $16+refreshements

Yeah, that was really annoying. However this one time I was at a theater and it was pretty empty. They was this group of dumbass 14 year olds shining their laser pointers at the screen and giggling like idiots. Finally this huge guy turns to them and yells "YOU CAN STOP NOW." That shut them up for the rest of the movie. It was nice.

That always happens to me when I ride public transportation. I've usually had pretty good experiences in movie theatres but I often go at odd times and/or see odd movies meaning I'm usually sitting in a different sort of audience.

My cousin works at the movies,so I get in for free.

But good points. And sometimes the movie sucks balls, too.

But I would have to say that THIS IS the year for movies! You got your SpiderMan(even though it was like love-story shit,I liked it and will get it on video I'M A SPIDEY FAN!)Austin Powers in Goldmember,Minority Report,Lilo and Stitch(I still have to see that one)Master in Disguise,Mr.Deeds,Ice Age,Stuart Little 2,Scooby-Doo,Triple X and so much more! Tis the year for movies,IMO.

I certainly hope that's not a typo on the Dana Carvey movie "Master of Disuise" because that movie has bee getting HORRID reviews

and I'm not talkin just from Roper and Ebert, but every critic on earth seems to hate that movie...that should be saying something about.

Just because Dana Carvey is funny on SNL, doesn't mean the film is.

The movie isn't very funny. (the outtakes at the end are funnier than the movie). Don't see it.

I find early Matinee showings (except for kids/family movies) tend to be free of this problems. You can enjoy a movie with few people in the theater and a at a good price. Win-Win situation all around!

And actually this Movie year has been good all around, at least for the stuff I've seen. Changing Lanes, Fraility, Minority Report, Road to Perdition are all awesome films that are worth seeing. And Spiderman was a good popcorn muncher.

Course with the good comes the bad, a la Master of Disguise and Mr. Deeds (Yes, I find Adam Sandler movies to be very...unfunny...)

Fun thing to do if you get to a theater too early... look for an arcade machine sitting in a hall way. sit in a bench ooks towards it and then count how many kids run up and mess with it....

before watching PPG I counted 15 such kids, not counting ones who messed with it more then once... one of them who messed with the machine at least 3 times told my friend and I as we were watching the end credits "I hope you know soon you'll be the only people left in the theater... so have fun" his parents looked at him in quit humilation.

Well we're animation students so we stay mainly just to see the crew details (one of the main animators of Nana [Lilo's sister] in Lilo&Stitch was my friend's intro to animation teacher, a fact she pointed out to me the three times her teacher's name was on screen)... and the dumb kid interupted during the best part of the credits! when it list the Korean Animation studios who worked so hard yet get little credit!

I enjoy the occasional movie once in a while, and Malaysia gets some movies quite fast, and the occasional foreign and art films.

Well, the most recent movie I watched was "The Touch" by Michelle Yeoh.
Verdict = horrible beyond words >.<
You have been warned!
