I'm gonna be dead if I don't sort this out now - direct sound wasn't working and I just accidently uninstalled some software and now the sound's gone altogether from this damn computer. If you're online, please help me now coz I've gotta sort it out now or be murdered

What, someone is going to kill you if you don't fix it? Like a parent or something? Anyway, reinstall directx, reinstall teh sound drivers.

Yup, re-installing the drivers is the best advice I can offer as well.

I know this is not a good advice from me but it may actually save you from getting murdered...Sorry I am no computer expert as well.
Back up all important files. Reformat your hard drive. Claim it was a virus attack and you apologise sincerely for the situation. Hopefully someone could reinstall Windows and drivers for you.

Thanks everyone - what I did in the end was save everything important (ROMs, MP3s, my dad's university work) to some CDs, rebooted the whole fucking system and said I was doing "something technical that you wouldn't understand" to my ruthless mother. Anyway thanks a lot for all your help guys
