Tech Romancer: Perfection when it comes to fighting mechas? Quite probably!

A week ago, a friend came from another state, and he bought Tech Romancer for Dreamcast, then (as usual) I borrowed it from him...
I played this game in arcades some years ago, but never paid attention because I thought it was just another 3D button masher, boy, I was wrong, very wrong...

This game is pure happines from beggining to end, and if you’re an anime lover, you will worship this game!

Tech Romancer (or Choukousenki Kikaioh in Japan) is a Capcom fighter, in it you control big mechas instead of humans, and your attacks are not your classic hadoken or reppuken, the mechas use missiles, laser beams, bombs, and stuff like that.

Gameplay: this game looks like a button masher at first, and while it’s true to a degree, it’s really enjoyed when it’s fully mastered.
The game plays basically in a 3d enviroment, your moves are quite limited, but you can wander through the stage with no problems.
The game offers the same motions for all characters, there are not qfc motions, just forward, back and a combination of buttons, if you press down or up, you will walk to the desired position on the 3D field.
There is a guard button, a jump button, two basic attacks and a button to change weapon.
This may feel weird at first, I mean, a block and a jump button? Sounds weird indeed, but you get used to it, believe me, and it works wonders.
And while we are at the gameplay thing, sometimes you destroy buildings, little mountains light towers and stuff scattered across the stage, when you do that, you will find items that will help you on your battle. There are tons of weapons with different uses, curative items, itmes that increases power, defense and armor.
Speaking of armor, let me explain the game system a bit: You start with a bar of energy, when this bar is depleted, you proceed to the next bar, and your opponent (or you) will continue fighting with the remaining energy (Think of it like in Killer Instinct or in Vampire Savior). You have an armor counter, initially it’s at 100%, and it decreases when you receive damage while guarding (it decreases when you get normal damage as well, but not as much as when you guard); when this armor counter reaches zero, you will receive more damage, even when you’re guarding, so, turtling is not an option in this game.
You also have your usual supers and specials, but when the enemy’s second energy bar has received 40% of damage (or more), you can perform a final attack move, usually these moves are slow, but if it connects, it kill the oponent inmediatly.
You have a wide selection of styles in this game, you have the classic agile mechas, strong but slow and the like.
Every mecha responds pretty good, there’s a character for every style of gameplay.

Sound: This game doesn’t have excellent music, but the tracks aren’t annoying or repetitive, they’re just not very memorable...
The voices sound clear and crispy, there’s tons of voice acting in this game (in japanese of course), and they all sound very cool (you gotta love when they say something in engrish, he he).
The battle sounds are good, you have your usual metal smashing sounds, beam sounds, and similar stuff... Oh, and explosions, tons of explosions!

Graphics: This game is average when it comes to graphics, it has many cool effects though...
Some of these effects are way too cool, for example, when you land from a very strong impact, you will leave a crater, or you will leave trace of your way on the floor. And of course, you can destroy buildings!
The stages are very good looking, you fight on a desert, city, snow, a terrain filled with lava, airports and some alien landscapes...
A detail I like a lot, is when your mecha get his/her armor destroyed, you can see the damage that the mecha has sustained, I mean, you can see broken armor and sparks flying on the damaged part!

Extras: Now, this is were the game really shines! It has the coolest single mode on any fighting game (IMHO of course), depending on the mecha you choose, you will have an unique storyline to follow, but that’s not all, because most mechas have branching paths, and some of them have more than a pilot. This is truly a gem when it comes to single player mode.
There’s the Hero Challenge mode too, this is, basically, a 1P game, without story, you fight all the mechas in order the reach the number one spot at the ranking, and playing this mode will let you earn poinrs...
Points? Yeah, points! There are TONS (and when I say TONS I mean TONS) of things to unlock! I won’t spoil anything, I bet you will enjoy unlocking things for weeks (or even months!)

This game, is a must have if you like fighting games, nuff said!

I've owned Tech Romancer for awhile, it's a damn fine game... makes me wish more companies would make mech fighting games..

The same here.

I have Tech Romancer, the 'anime' like, and Virtual On, the 'serious' like, both really good mech fighting games.

By the way, this game is so good for the seiyuu fan that I am (japanese version of course).

The thing about Tech Romancer that I don't like is the last boss is serious cheese. Not only is he stronger than you, but he has no destructible armor, plus when you kill him, he resurrects with two full life bars. Yeesh.

He's a sucker for dash moves, like the round red & yellow character's move where he dashes and spins his arms. Don't know that character's name offhand.

Yes, Mecha action + Shouji Kawamori designs + Mecha from all genres of anime + Bloodia 2 = Fun fighting game.

I also like the fact how Capcom USA left the voices alone, saving us from bad video gaming dubbing. That, and the opening song was left in Japanese (Which is cool cause it has a total 80's mecha feel...)

Tech Romancer's an EX shiny game, and there's only one true fault with it, the lack of a training mode...(and thus, Shadow Red's combo potential will remain untapped...)

I love Tech Romancer, I used to play it all the time, and I pull it out when I need some giant robot mashing. One thing though, it took a long time to unlock Jin and Blodia, and they are very underwhelming.

Hmm? Did you use the VMU mini-games to get the points? Cause that's a lot faster than the hero challenge mode (especially if you do well in the mini-games)

As for Blodia...it's one of the deadliest mechs in the game, an insane brawler that does tons of armor damage, and that mid-air Giga Crush is possibly the game's best air to air (not to mention an excellent air to ground/cross-up move)

"FULL METAL CHARGE!" heh heh

Heh, I guess I should have been more specific. Blodia just doesn't do it for me in the style department, and Jin's voice pisses me the hell off. I still use Dixen the most, all those projectile attacks rock.

Tech Romancer, minus the overly annoying last boss, is a fun game but what I find most interesting about the game is that it re-affirms that Jin is a wild man. When you fire off the shoulder beam cannon weapon add-on for Blodia Jin will bellow "BEEEEEEAAAAAM!!!" Damn Jin, calm down, you're only pushing a button. I wonder if when Jin is driving a car he screeches out "TURN SIGNAAAAAL!!!" or whatever for every little thing he does while operating a motor vehicle.

If you dont scream your moves at the top of your lungs then you probably dont deserve to ride a giant robot.

When i drive i pass red lights with style: i yell "ILLEGAL-RED-LIGHT-ATTACKKKK!!!" and i leave trails of blue shadows behind me.
