Poll
I can only read basic words. So, that puts me in the second category. Not a drop
Same here. But I can often find what I am looking for in Japanese porn sites....ermmmm ...yeah... *runs away*... Ikuze is the only word i know...
I understand the Romanji 'n I know a lot of Kanji since I'm Chinese ^_^
It's interesting to read Chinese subtitles of Japanese shows. I've seen some cases where the english subtitles done in pirate DVDs have horrible, horrible translations, but the Chinese subtitles (from what I can tell) seems to be pretty accurate.
I guess the translator was Chinese who has knowledge of Japanese, but not of English. :)
btw, I didn't do the poll since I don't think a native Japanese counts in this type of poll.
My roommate lived all his life in Texas (yes, TEXAS) but somehow learned to read Japanese rather fluently. Good example of "if you work hard enough, and show interest in a subject, you can learn just about anything".
So those of you learning Japanese (Shin, for example) I wish you good luck. Only thing really hard in Japanese is the sheer volume. The grammatical structure and rules are pretty precise.

And most of all, even if your life depends of it, NEVER, I mean NEVER begin to learn bungo(classic japanese). This thing from hell (which was surely created by Satan or Blue Mary) is the most beautifull language ever created, but when you begin to master it, you begin to forget the normal Japanese. And people laugh when you begin to say things like "ikade mibaya" or "Hitoni arazu". BLUE MARY, IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!!!!(unfold a heavy beam of energy to Blue MAry and burn her alive)
Do you mean "Kobun"? Kobun is classic, ancient japanese, and is taught in highschool. It's horrible. It's totally worthless in real-life, as no one would speak it in such way. Sorta like learning shakespearian speech. :)
Japanese is written up to down, right to left. In modern days, when it's written sideways, it reads in western style, left to right. However, in the old days, when it was written sideways it read right to left.
"Kobun" written in Japanese backwards (in kanji) can be read "Bungo". Maybe that's where you got confused? Or perhaps the word "Bungo", meaning "written language"?
