I'm weighing up the pros and cons of each console because I want to buy one after my exams and currently I'm drawn towards the X-Cox because of its online capabilities. However, I don't want to run up a big-arse phone bill, so can I connect to online servers using my currrent dial-up account?

No it's broadband only, but it's a $50 fee for one year of online play. Please for the rest of us upgrade to broadband. I hate playing Counter strike and someone is lagging the game with their modem. It's sad, that so many broadband companies went bust because people don't want to upgrade to a FAR better service. It's only $20 a month.

Could you suggest some good services? AOL combined with the low line quality in my area(a somewhat ghetto neighborhood) have gotten on my nerves. Besides, my parents are already paying $20 so it shouldn't hurt.

Usually the cable bill will be less than the extra phone line and the dial up service combined, so go for cable.
I dont know about the 20 bucks a month cable, never seen it that low in my area.

There is a plan for $20 a month with dsl. I have $40 a month plan for cable from at&t. Just do what I did. Goto google.com and type "broadband". There's lots stuff there. I can't say what which one will work for you. Because some of them might not be avalible in your area.

To tell you the truth I'm probably going to get an XBox at the end of the year, and at the price of $200 it's not a bad console, but I'm going to work on getting a GameCube and some of that stuff first.

I say wait a little bit on the GC. At least intill Mario comes out in August. X-box has got some good shit coming and some good stuff now. And my favorite feature of the x-box is, the ability to rip my music on to the 8 gig hd. I got like 20 cd's on it. While my friend has got like 50.

Oh man, phuck the X-Cox, broadband costs like £50 a month over here. Console gaming's too expensive man, unless it gets more affordable or I get a lot richer I'm calling it quits

DSL - There's no cable where I live. Damn it woulda been wockid playing you guys via internet. Kawaks online play doesn't work well for me either coz there's no local server. Still, I can always get my mates round for a face-to-face multiplayer
