According to BBC News Online, the costumed mascot of the Hartlepool United Football Club in the UK, known as H'Angus, was elected mayor of Hartlepool.

Okay, so it's actually going to be the monkey's performer, Stuart Drummond, who takes office in the mascot's stead -- and it seems Drummond does actually want to get a couple of serious things accomplished in office. Still though, to me, this is along the lines of Michael Moore trying to get ficus plants elected in public office -- but the monkey actually succeeded!

As a result, the government is considering removing the system of directly-elected mayors.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha.... There have been a good number of problems with this system in the past, too, though... still, it's quite funny. A case of a " joke gone too far " , I'd imagine. ^_^ Reminds me of the story of Caligula's horse.
