Are there any boot discs to play imports on a PS2 (for Japanese games on an American system), or do you have to get a system modified?

there are no boot discs that currently play imports, I am told. Mod chip development is apparenly continuting, I am waiting until I get the word from NCSX when one is ready for publc consumption, I trust them far more than Lik-Sang or anyone else in that industry.

If I remember correctly, that thingee works in conjunction with a commercial boot disc like a GameShark to allow you to play COPIED DVDs and such. I don't think it plays PS2 original imports. I fear that the ability to run pirated games is a higher priority for those developing mod devices than playing imports. They really don't have any incentive to try and develop devices that only play imports to try and avoid legal problems, since the UK court ruled against Channel Technologies on the basis that even enabling people to play import games was illegal. Punks. Anyway, I'm gonna wait and see, and if no good solution shows itself in a while, I might sell all my US PS2 stuff and switch over to a Japanese PS2 and the original imports of all my current games.

I see the situation with playing non-local games to be getting worse, not better, I am thinking I should just abandon buying North American hardware altogether, since it's the Japanese games I want.

It depends on what version. If you got a version 4 (SCHP-300(1,2,3)R) Get a Messiah. It boots everything. If you got Anying else (1-3 or 4 if you want to be cheap or just want the import feature) go origa chip. It boots imports. But not copies without a Gameshark. If you got version 5(There is an extra screw in the expanstion bay) like me. Umm.. wait intill neo 5 comes out. It boots everything.

Doesn't the R work? It's supposed to be a plug in...not wire based.
