I just saw this on the local news (I live in Hawaii) and Square's office here in Hawaii that made the Final Fantasy movie will be no more. This saturday they're auctioning off all their equipment... including over a million dollars worth of computer eqiupment. It's a shame the movie's failure will be a major setback for any future cgi movies with a mature theme. If you want to buy what's left of Square USA, you can register here http://www.hawaiianauctions.com

That's not Square USA, that's just Square Hawaii, they're two different companies.

Hmm, I thought Square Hawaii was going to be bought by some other company...oh well

It was also sad news that the 10 dollars I spent to see it will never ever return to me.

Some real sad news?

The 90 minutes I spent watching that crappy flick I can't get back.

THAT is sad.

No, its official name is (was) Square USA. Not to be confused with Squaresoft, the distributer of Square games in North America.

You don't have to register to see the items for auction... they even have pictures of everything from the kitchen that even still has the coffee maker... to their entire server of computers. The links are towards the bottom of the main page.

Bah. That's what Square gets for forgetting that in the end, the key components of Final Fantasy is supposed to be the story and emotion within that story, ESPECIALLY for a movie. Where were the facial expressions!?

And on a side note, where were the chocobos? The moogles? The "EVERYTHING THAT MADE FINAL FANTASY ACTUALLY FINAL FANTASY" things!? What the POINT of using a trademark license is is beyond me if they don't actually use any aspects of that license... (And no, storyline style of some random "PURITY OF THE EARTH!" inner deep soul thing doesn't count)

You could see something was awfully wrong with the movie when Aki launched the flare at the beggining of the movie just to highlite the Pepsi logo. haha..

The Final Fantasy movie had plenty of things similar to the games?

-8 Spirits of the Earth to save the world=The Crystal Elements to save the world
-Phantoms come from space on interstellar rock=How the monsters get to Earth in FF8
-Gaia=FF7 Lifestream
-Aki's spaceship=Airship
-Sid=Cid
-Aki=Earth loving female lead(Terra, Aerith, Yuna, etc.)
-Grey=Female lead love interest/toughguy(Cloud, Tidus, Squall, etc)

Sure there wasn't any magic spells or Chocobo's or Moogles but there were PLENTY of similarities to the games in this movie!

I for one liked this movie but it's a damn shame it bombed. Personally I think if Square just did the movie in a quality found in FF10 they wouldn't have lost as much financially...and probably had enough to try and make another movie...oh well.

Sadly, for me, the airship has been so twisted from what it used to look like in old final fantasy games and re-hashed so much in other RPGs that I wouldn't care if it were not in any more future Final Fantasies, and Cid is starting to approach that line, too, because it's starting to be more and more just a name. In all honesty, the earth loving female with 'bad ass' male lead is something that I've seen done in so many stories in addition to Final Fantasy that I'm starting to get sick of that, too...

Thing is, most of those things weren't things that I'd really care to see in a movie, personally. I mean, to see chocobos and moogles hit the big screen? That would have been damn awesome! The airship though is mostly just a gameplay thing and Cid is mostly just a name and the crystals are mostly just a storyline element. Unfortunately, they don't contribute much to the viewing experience, IMHO, because in the end, a movie is watched. They should give us things we want to WATCH, I think :P (And that includes facial expressions, dagnabbit! :P) Because we are the lazy generation that wants everything handed out to us on a silver platter in big shiny colors, and by golly, they'd better give it to us!

Besides, I would have rather had 8 fiends of the elements than 8 puny crystals (Erm, I mean, spirits) to gather up. Bleh. But something like Tiamat on the big screen? And Kraken? ...oh wait, Aki sorta already dreamed about hentailicious Kraken anyways. But we want big shiny CG'd monsters (not aliens) with cool neato special effects!

And really, sci-fi movies with aliens are a dime a dozen these days, I think, even if one adds on a whole bunch of convuluted muck about random philosophies of spirits and elements to it. It's sad, really. If Square had made FF stick to mideival or steampunk mideival with magic and monsters instead of the 'done 10000 times already sci-fi' with aliens, they would have monopolized the fantasy movie market long before Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings came out...
