Taken from a post in Gamefaqs...
This year game will contain a total of 52 characters (13 teams of 4). 7 characters will make their first appearance and 9 will make a comeback on the KOF scene. 3 characters were take out : Takuma Sakazaki, Chin Gensai and Hinako Shinjo.
Also, it seems that the striker system will be the same has the one in 2K1. Finally, this chapter will put an end to the NESTS/Psychic Dragon Power saga. If a new KOF is made in 2003, it will probably be a Dream Match with the most popular characters in the entire series.
The release of KOF 2K2 will probably be in September, after some beta testing around the end of August in Japan (certainly to the Neogeo-Land).

Sounds pretty legit...though I thought 2K1 was the end of the NESTS story...

Dude, I don't believe this, but I swear, if neither Mai or Mary were on the Fatal Fury team, then that would suck! I would one year actually like to see Terry, Andy, Mary, and Mai with Joe getting his own team. That'd be cool (many would disagree with me, and I do like Joe, don't get me wrong, which is why I'd want him to have his own team...besides, it'd be a good way to inflate his ego. ). Anyway, since that will never happen, I know either Mary or Mai will be on the Fatal Fury team (Mary I hope). That Art of Fighting team looks nice though, I always wanted it to be Ryo, Robert, Yuri, and King. I always thought that'd be cool. I wonder what the ACTUAL teams will be? Maybe that Art of Fighting team will come through.....it would be nice to see that vengeful team and that was a good idea on the Korean team, Dr. Baghead.

'95 ending: beats up his team. '96 ending: beats up his team. '97: no team. I read on the interent an opinion that noone wanted to team up with him because they knew he would beat up team, and I agree. '98 doesn't count. '99: hidden no team. 2000: no team. 2001: gets Seth from Benimaru team and half of K' team. Who the hell do Seth and Vannessa work for anyway.

I actuall wouldn't care at this point if they coppied Capcom sense they've done it so much already.
Ultimate Korea Team: Kim Kaphwan, Kang Bae Dal, Jhun Hoon, Kim Sue Il. This idea is so bad ass (to me atleast). The ass kicking would never end.

yeah cool combination. But story wise makes no sense. Ryuji didn't get payed by Geese in '97 ending and attacks him in his office. They'd have to kiss and make up for him to want to team up with Billy. Mr. Big tried to kill Geese in '96 ending and Billy blocked the bullet with his cane. Why would Geese's #1 man team with him? Eiji though- could make up reasons for him to join.

clones in a story are about as bad as time travel. They seem to always lead to story mess ups.
In NESTS team ending, they are repeadedly called guiney pigs by the boss who wants them to sacrafice their bodies to him. So there's absolutely no reason for K9999 and Angel to team with loveable Igniz's woman. Also no reason for them to team with Krizalid who stikered them on the ... the... rocket blimp. Actually I don't care that much that it was a rocket blimp, I just remember that it was funny reading that the beta testers laughed at it.

I still think it's odd that a gamefaqs bbs poster is going to have insider information on this, and no given source. Even if it's true it's not worth assuming that it is until its verified, like in the way some sports plays are strategically stupid even if they work.
Either way I don't believe it. And yes it just looks like a new version of the old rumor.

Yeah. Chances are, I might not look at this either. KoF 2001 was a big let down for me. After I did beat 2001, I promised myself that I wouldn't play it again, and chances are that I won't play the next one either.
Kof 2k1 was just awful with boring characters and no more excitement left since the early days' before 99. It was a big let down for me also.
But I'm glad,if this is true,that Eolith listen to their fans and have the brought the man of SNK,Billy Kane,BACK!!  Mr.Big will definitley be one of my first played,as well as Eiji and Misty.
I hate rumors,but I hope this is true. And hope they don't use the stupid Southtown as base for the stages in KOF(like in 2k).

You know if there were actually a fighting game out there where the character(s) I like aren't dispised by the rest of the world, I'd be amazed!

Kang needs to be on Korea team...

I have to find a nice country to emigrate.)
