I heard someone started the rumor of Sonic characters in Melee and it had the snowball effect...
Of course, Nintendo could include them in the next installment...but I wonder how Mario could keep up with Sonic. That would be hilarious to see

It was the April issue of EGM that started the whole "Sonic in Smash Bros Melee" thing... This & now infamous fake MGSX pix in the April issue of GameNow (also published by same company as EGM), I guess people will never learn.

Well they still have people believing that Sheng Long is in SF2 after all these years. And then they went and pulled the same joke for SF3

Actually earlier on, months before SSBM's release Magic Box posted a bogus set of screenshots that had Sonic in it and a character select screen showing characters from Rare and Sega. It was taken down quickly, but for some reason there were people who still believed Sonic was in the game.

Who knows... but I think honesty on April Fool's day is underrated. People seem to think that you HAVE to tell lies on that day as part of some tradition or whatever.
I think the best April Fool's Joke ever I saw was at the late Gamefan online, they posted pics on 4/1/97 of the satellite Zelda game for Super Famicom where you play as Zelda and everyone thought it was bulldoody. (Plus the filename said "BS_Zelda", hehe)
Of course it ended up being true, but it still made fools out of some people, which is what the day is really about. :)
