quote: This will sound dumb, but how do you play a visual novel?
Or is it like an electronic comic that you just watch?
Visual Novels became popular with Leaf's VN series (Shizuku, Kizuato, and To Heart. The characters from these three games are in Queen of Heart, so you guys will probably recognize.)
VNs are played by simply reading along with the story, and once in a while there will be a selection of what to do. Selecting your action will put you on a path to continue the story in certain direction. It's like those old "choose your own adventure" type games.
Of course, by choosing the actions, the story can take a radically diffrent turn, guiding you to a completely diffrent story than the other selection.
This is a standard format for the traditional "Adventure" type games in Japan for decades, so what's diffrent about Visual Novels?
Nothing. The only diffrence is that VNs are presented in "novel format", with text overlaying the screen instead of being in the dialog box. Also, VNs are written in novel style of writing, instead of "game" style of writing. But the base core of "gameplay" is the same.
After the three games from Leaf (especially after the huge sucess of To Heart), floodgate of this "Visual Novel" type games opened with many copycats.
Kanon is written (and drawn) by the same people who handled "One" and "Air". (diffrent company, but same team)
Out of all the "Leaf wannabe"s, this team is the most sucessful.
I recommend Leaf's VN series the most. Besides, playing QOH is more fun when you know the story and characters well :)
Kanon/Air/One is high quality writing, but it's not my taste. Leaf's characters feel more familiar to me, than Kanon.
P.S: I've played um... umm.. I lost count (^^;
Uh, many visual novels. Of course, by the law of any media, 90% of them are crap. Like any game genre. But the few that shines, shines bright. Like any media. :)

About the first post: Piro has been a fan of these games ever since before Megatokyo started. I think he has put references to the games ever since episode one and has mentioned about his fandom several times on his rants.
Now, on the topic. There is a web page that seems to be very informative on this type of games. The name is Freetype, and it has reviews of bishoujo games, anime and other stuff. Although the author does not updates very often, the content is of very high quality. If you go to the features section you will find a link to an article called 'Gal Girls Come of Age' which I think is excellent introductory material, especially since the author takes a very unbiased position. Kanon pictures are included there if you want to know how it looks like.
I have a weak point against cute stuff and character developent (wonder what happens when you put both...), and I have been trying to get these games for a while, but damn that credit card ^^;; I think the Kanon, ONE and To Heart animes are very good, but they definitively are not for everyone, especially for the unpatient ^_-
