I would like to believe it...but until I see some actual confirmation, I'm gonna take this with a pinch of salt.
But 15 new playable characters...? The hell? I don't ever recall a fighting game introducing THAT many new characters in a fighting game sequel. If Eolith manages to do so, tops to them, especially if they manage to pull it off in less than a year with all the bugchecking (which is usually done at the bare minimum), sprite edits, and new character sprites. But seriously...15 new characters seem a bit too implausible to consider at the moment.
Let's look at the possibility of the teams returning to KOF2K2 according to this rumour:
Hizoku Team: Possible, especially since it involves Ron.
Botsu Team: Possible. The "rival team" factor and their involvement with the Dragon Power sounds possible. Plus I liked the Blaze character sketch. She looked cool. Hope she'll be just as cool a character to use.
Psycho Soldier: Definite. And Eolith better weaken Kensou in terms of his normals.
Burning Team: Definite. Just like Whip joining K's Team in KOF2K1 based on the KOF2K ending, so would Kula join K', Maxima, and Whip.
Ex-Nest Team: Possible, since K9999 and Angel are still alive. It'll be interesting to finally see Diana in action. Misty, we shall see, or could even be that Botsu character, Blaze, implemented here (she looks the type). We shall see.
Japan Team: Possible, since Shingo seems to be ostracised by Kyo, Beni, and Goro in the KOF2K1 ending...but Moe Habana? Umm... O_o;; She's the only one which I find hard to believe that she'll join KOF2K1 (Please, not another Kyo wannabe...)
Saishu Team: Possible, but again, Sho Kirishima?!?! He's a prototype character of Kyo, I wonder how the hell is Eolith going to introduce him and how is he going to play...(please, NOT another Kyo flame user dammit, we had enough Kyo clones in KOF99).
Kyokogen Team: Definite. We don't need to see this coming.
Garou Team: Definite, but I'm wary about the Mai/Mary changeover, since in the Fatal Fury ending, it shows that Terry is Mary's new partner (unless Mai does some serious persuading shit on Andy to convince him). However, it'll be damn cool to see Terry in his Garou costume.
Korean Team: Possible, with exception to Bae Dal...a Fight Fever character? Hmm...
New Korean Team: Unsure: Since we've an extra Korean character (Mei Li), it could be possible but on the other hand, they could get rid of Mei Li and just go back with old Jhun in the old Korean team, since his injuries should have recovered storywise. Sure, Mei Li is new and has potential but on the other hand, they got rid of Eiji after one game, no? The same with Foxy. Kim's kids...uh...
Heroine Team: Possible. Though I wish they get rid of Hinako...
Ikari Team: Definite.
Southtown Team: Unsure. Sure, a team Rick, Billy, and Sendo sounds cool but what would they have to do storywise? Billy was Geese's henchman and I don't see any reason for him to return now that Geese is dead (don't give me any of that chi crap that he's alive). Plus WTF would they form a team for? What's their reason for fighting in KOF? What's the connection? If you ask my opinion, I think this team is rather unlikely to happen, and instead, Li XiangFei could return to the Heroine Team to replace Hinako (if they get rid of her). Otherwise, I doubt this team would ever happen.
Yagami Team: Possible...though didn't Iori beat fought with Seth, Vanessa, and Ramon in their ending? Unless they must have put up a really, really good fight with Iori for him to be impressed with their abilities...If this team doesn't happen, then Iori is interchangeble with either the Saishu Team, or Kyo's Team...but I not sure about this because he hates the Kusanagi clan, so I don't think he'd ever work with them (unless you count him working with Kyo during the Orochi saga).
If you rearrange the teams around, let's say disregard the Botsu team, retain the Blaze character for the Ex-Nests Team, get rid of the Southtown team and Hinako, retain Li XiangFei in the Women's Team, get rid of Mei Li (or Jhun, whoever's less popular) and retain the old Korean Team, you'll have:
Hizoku Team: Unchanged. Psycho Soldiers: Unchanged. Burning Team: Unchanged. Ex-Nests Team: K9999, Angel, Diana, Blaze Japan Team: Kyo, Benimaru, Goro, [empty] Saishu Team: Saishu, Shingo, [empty], [empty] Kyokogen Team: Unchanged. Garou Team: Unchanged. Korean Team: Kim, Choi, Chang (though to be honest, I wish they get rid of this two but that's unlikely...), Jhun/Mei Li Heroine Team: King, Blue Mary, Kasumi Todo, Li XiangFei Ikari Team: Unchanged. Yagami Team: Unchanged.
You have up to 6-7 new characters possibility, which I think is already quite good and decent for a sequel. Of course, if this rumour actually come true and they pull off a sequel with more than 10 new characters just like KOF97 (10, not including Orochi Iori/Leona, since OI and OL are redrawn sprites with same moves. NFT and Orochi NFT may be redrawn from one another but they're quite different distinctively in moves otherwise), I'll have to applaud them for their effort...
But until then...
*sprinkle the pinch of salt on his fries*

Story:
"The story took up just right following the KOF2001 one. Nests collapsed, but its roots still exist. Igniz in fact had a brother (NOTE: the one he talked about in one KOF2001 ending maybe?). Anyway the hosts of the tournament are the blonde girl who was at Igniz's side in KOF2001 and Long, Lin former master. The story emphasize on Chine, mistic power and so on. VERY DIFFERENT atmosphere from 99/2001 tecno style, everything is more 'mystical' this year. Long and the lady seems to be after the 'Dragon Power' which is contained in Kensou/Bao and they like to fully awake it in order to seize that and control the world."
That sounds good to me. Maybe the Psycho Soldier team will have a big role in this one instead of just being there.
"New team rooster is:
Hizoku Team: Lin, Sai, Ran, Chitto This is formed by Lin and his three fellow we saw in KOF2001 (a victory pose of Lin), say the big guy (Sai), the sexy gal (Ran, who use some flame power out of her feet) and the weird child (Chitto). Spelling of the names can be wrong, they're written in chinese character with Japanese pronune written aside, thus the correct spelling may vary (as for Xian Fei - Shanfee)"
That's interesting.
"Botsu Team: Blaze, Koji Botsu, Maya Botsu, Puma This is the new tream of the game, the Botsu family is a Japan old family which is rival to Lin Hizoku clan and also involved to the Dragon Power, you can see thir sketch in KOF2001 mook, even if preliminary. They're look is quite trendy, metropolitan and -er- weird. Blaze is a sexy femal dressed with a tight blak latex full body suit and a violet trenchcoat over that. She uses two blades in fighting, which are put on her hands. Koji is a Kyo-like character, but seem younger and navier. Maya is a young 'cute' female with a smart look, short hair and kinf od abiator glasses on her hands. Puma is a big wrestler.lika characters, he has felin ear nad I think he wears a kind of mask."
I'd like to see the designs for this.
"Psycho Soldier Team: Athena Asamiya, Sie Kensou, Bao, Chin Gentsai Nothing new here, Athena will be redrawn again, but still nothing new. Kensou has full Psycho Power returned now, not only the Psycho Ball."
They need a better role in this one.
"Burning Team: K', Maxima, Whip, Kula Pretty obvious after KOF2001. Kula will be redraw, no other change announced."
Nothing new here. Kula would be interesting on this team. Not like you couldn't predict it from the 2001 ending.
"Ex-Nest Team: K9999, Angel, Diana, Misty After the assassination of Foxy. Diana come to spy K9999 moves and pretend to be loyal to him, while she is still whit Kula (she remitted the little one in K' hands for this mission). Misty is a new female character. She is young, busty, green haired lady with a 'tough&nasty' look. She remainds me Kaori from Akira, and she's dressed up pretty much like a biker (a red suit which recall me Kaneda's from Akira too). Diana fight with a rapier like Foxy did. [NOTE: Whoa! Sure Brezza want to portray K9999 as manly anti-hero, another year a male with three gal in a team]"
Don't know much about them anyway. I really don't care for the NESTS team much.
"Japan Team: Kyo Kusanagi, Benimaru Nikaido, Goro Daimon, Moe Habana Does Eolith plans to keep NeoBlood in the offial KOF continuity? I hope not. Anway Moe is introduced by Kyo. Goro is now redraw and fight with his complete judo suit. Benimaru has its hair down."
Why Moe Habana. Shingo was better on this team. Anyway, I just hope she has some new moves. Benimaru with his hair down!?! He'll look more like a girl now! I still like this team.
"Saishu Team Saishu Kusanagi, Shingo Yabuki, Sho Kirishima, Chizuru Kagura Does Saishu made up this thing? We knew from 2001 Japan ending he was to train Shingo. The same is with Sho (or spell it Syo, whoi actually was just a Kyo prototype, huh!). The Kagura presence lead me to think all this relates to the Dragon Power as well. A new 'holy/devilish' power as the Orochi one to be sealed off?"
I'm looking forward to this team, but with Syo on it, I don't think this will work. I'm sure they'll think of a way to get this going though. I do like Syo's design. I hope they add more animation to Chizuru, especially when she dances in her win pose. It needs it.
"Kyokungen team: Same as 2000."
THEY SERIOUSLY NEED A SERIOUS ROLE!!! Especially since the game is supposed to be more ancient Chinese mystical stuff. I would assume this team would take this stuff seriously. I'm sick of them being the comic relief in KOF.
"Garou team: Same as 99, with Mai's back in place of Mary, Terry will appears in his MotW outfit, which I say is logical after Rock appareance in KOF2001. In the story they're to know something about Rock family... VERY INTERESTING"
Mai's back....yay. I'm soooo exited. (sarcasm) Terry shouldn't be in his full MotW outfit. It should have been gradually done. This year Terry can be without his hat. Next years ending could have Mary dying (sorry Mary fans) and she gives him her jacket. Then later he could cut his hair. It's gonna be interesting to know about Rock's family. Even though they should leave that for Mark of the Wolves.
"Korean Team Kim Kapwahn, Chang Koehan Choi Bongue, Bae Dal Bae Dal is tha prototype whe saw as a KOF2000 extra stricker."
"New Korean Team Jooh Hoon, Kim Dong Hwang, Kin Jae Hoon, May Lee Now this is interesting. I see Eolith want to emphasise the Korean part in the rooster. Joon Hoon was already said to be influent in Kim's sons education, now we see the why. The two sons will appear in very juvenile image (maybe as Bao? I think a little older)."
I like Jae Hoon. I just never use him. Let's just hope that Kim's sons will be about 12-15 years old. They shouldn't kick ass like in MOTW. They should be OK.
"Heroine Team King, Blue Mary, Kasumi Todo, Hinako Shijo Oh well, old character, new combination."
BORING....
"Ikari Team Same as 2001. In the story, they're after Whip and Nests remaining."
At least Heidern is back in this one too instead of a one year tease.
"Southtown Team Rick Strow, Li Xian Fei, Billy Kane, Tsugumi Sendo Have I spelled correct the first name? He's the guy from RB2 anyway. Again, this is interesting. I see Brezza is getting a lot of characters from side games, like Tsugumi Sendo (from Wild Ambition) and prototypes... are they trying to get bargains in creating new designs?)"
BILLY KANE.....NUFF SAID
"Yagami Team Same as 2001 Seth is leading reserch to find out about what remains of Nests. IOri will appear in a new outfit, same pats, same shirt, different jaket (a long one, as the KOF2000 another striker)."
It's about damn time Iori got a new outfit. Even though I liked the jacket I hope this one is cool and keeps the moon crest on his back.
"Bosses confirmed till now: 1) Long (su-bboss) 2) [Unknow] Final boss, Igniz brother
I dunno if the blonde lady will also fight. As a striker maybe?
Little is know about the new fighting system. Striker and 'ratio' system remains for sure. A new 'double charging' system is annuced for the power bar, but I don't now in what that consist.
I'm kinda sick of the sriker system.
Final COMMET WHOA!!! 15 team! Well, this will surely be a very incredible hit! How larger (in megs) this game will be? Can't wait to see more"
This will be a BIG game. It sounds like a KOF reawakening. Let's just hope at least 80% of this is true. That, and let's just hope the artist gets better OR they just get a new artist. A professional well known one would be cool, but would probably cost too much.

In the post accessed by the above link, Shito wrote:

I firmly believe that the information posted by Shito is entirely a fabrication on his part. I own the King of Fighters 2001 mook to which he refers, and I believe that he has created his "information" based on the design sketches found in the mook coupled with his own knowledge of the recent installments in the KOF series. His claims regarding the progression of the series' story and team roster changes make a certain amount of sense at first glance (his claims would have to, or absolutely no one would believe him especially in light of his admittedly vague source(s)). However, his fiction is revealed for what it is by either his inability to read Japanese, his assumption that those reading his post would not also own the KOF 2001 mook, or both.
Shito refers to the second team in his post as the "Botsu Team." He claims that this is the family name of the clan from which at least two of this team's members hail (referred to by Shito as Koji Botsu and Maya Botsu). The word "BOTSU" does appear in English in the text that accompanies the preliminary sketches of these characters in the KOF 2001 mook. The sketches are found in the bottom left corner of this image (http://www.planetps2.com/mmcafe/pics01/kof2k1-conte1-ga.gif) [thanks to Variable Savior for the link!]. Notice the Kanji character just to the left of "BOTSU." In Japanese, this character is pronounced "botsu," and it means "discarded." In the terminology of the design sketch collections of Japanese video game mooks, "botsu" is used to indicate sketches that were part of a game's initial design phase, but were ultimately unused (or "discarded") by the game's designers prior to the game's completion.
Later, in response to Shito's post, Fygee commented: I hope they don't call K's team the "Burning Team", especially now that Kula is supposedly on board.
To those familiar with the various team names used throughout the KOF series, it should be apparent that the team names Shito uses in his post are probably not "official" (assuming any of his information is, which -- once again -- I don't believe). Shito refers (in his later reply posting) to the "Burning Team ending" in KOF 2001. If memory serves, the 2001 team of K' - Maxima - Whip - Lin was called the "Shujinkou Team" ["shujinkou" meaning "protagonist; main character; hero(ine) (of a story)"] in Japan, and the "Hero Team" in America. Obviously, the "Burning Team" is a term of Shito's own making (especially since such a name would make even less sense if Lin were to be replaced with Kula, as Fygee pointed out).
It could therefore be argued that perhaps the official KOF 2002 team names have not yet been chosen. And perhaps Shito didn't understand the use of the Japanese word "botsu" in conjunction with the sketches he found in his KOF 2001 mook, and simply used the word in the team's name for ease of reference. However, he claims that "Botsu" is the family name of this team, and that the official names of two of this team's members are Koji Botsu and Maya Botsu. All my familiarity with the Japanese language and all my research into Japanese names indicates that "Botsu" is not a Japanese name. The idea that a group of "botsu" [discarded] character designs should be later used as the basis for new characters in a sequel is not unusual (witness Kirishima Syo, an early discarded design for Kusanagi Kyo later resurrected as Striker character for KOF '99 Evolution and KOF 2000). But the idea that a game company would take a group of "botsu" character designs, use them in a sequel, and call them the "Botsu" family (again, not a real Japanese name) is just ridiculous.
This, coupled with Shito's intentionally obscure sources, can only lead me to conclude that he made the whole thing up.

Yeah, the 2 Korean teams make no sense. Why would Dong Hwan and Jae Hoon be on a separate teams as Kim? Plus, there's a story, yet the existence of the 2 Kim brothers makes no sense (they'd be the same age as Rock, who is like 10 in Terry's win pose).
Botsu team? Botsu in Japanese means "cut" as in characters like Syo and Osamu-kun. And why would Syo be in it, since he's not even really in the game?
It's funny, a lot of the team setups I saw came from a 2ch thread, "The thread were we guess about KOF 2002".
Either way, true or not, I do not praise anyone for this kind of information. I had little fun guessing the boss of 2001 because some worker thought it'd be cool to release it ahead of time. Getting information early is one thing; spilling trade secrets is another.

Not to sound pestimistic, but I'll believe it when I see it!
Still, I'll add my two cents on the so-call roster.
Hizoku Team: Lin, Sai, Ran, Chitto
Not really interested in this team. I didn't care for Lin.
Botsu Team: Blaze, Koji Botsu, Maya Botsu, Puma
See Hizoku Team.
Psycho Soldier Team: Athena Asamiya, Sie Kensou, Chin Gentsai, Bao
Sad to say, but Bao's not leaving this team anytime soon (The minus in one of my favorite all-time teams.)
Burning Team: K', Maxima, Whip, Kula Diamon
Really, who didn't see this one coming?!
Ex-Nest Team: K9999, Angel, Diana, Misty
Haven't played 2001 just yet (My English copy should be arriving in a couple of weeks.) but my summary for K9999 and Angel will wait til then. As for Diana; geez like KOF really needs another sword user!
Japan Team: Kyo Kusanagi, Benimaru Nikaido, Goro Daimon, Moe Habana
I'd rather Shingo stays on the team. Daimon in full gi looked pretty cool in 2000, but Benimaru with his hair down?! I'm not liking it!
Saishu Team: Saishu Kusanagi, Shingo Yabuki, Syo Kirishima, Chizuru Kagura
I'd rather have Cosplayer Kyoko on the team than Chizuru (Don't care for her and I miss the old black school uniform.)
Kyokungen team: Ryo Sakazaki, Robert Garcia, Yuri Sakazaki, Takuma Sakazaki
As long as it's the 99 and 2001 team and not the 2000 team, I'll be happy (Yuri should've never left the team.).
Fatal Fury team: Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, Mai Shiranui
To be honest, I prefered the 99 team myself. Kind of a more old school feel with characters that appeared prior to FF3. Terry in MOTW duds?! Doesn't really matter to me if his cloths changes or not. He'll still play the same (Few moves, solid combos and damage.)
Korean Team: Kim Kapwahn, Chang Koehan Choi Bongue, Bae Dal
Don't care. Not really of my favorite teams in the 1st place.
New Korean Team: Jhun Hoon, Kim Dong Hwang, Kin Jae Hoon, May Lee
Like we really need another Korean team! Tae Kwon Do is becoming the Shotokan Karate of the SNK universe! Good grief!
Heroine Team: King, Blue Mary, Kasumi Todo, Hinako Shijo
Am I the only who likes Hinako?! Kasumi returns. Joy! More turtling antics from the cpu. Maybe they'll give her another counter. Four's not enough?!
Ikari Team: Leona, Ralf, Clark, Heidern
By far one my least favorite teams, made even more so with Heidern's return in 2001. Looks like they're dropping another rank if Heidern returns in 2002.
Southtown Team: Rick Strowd, Li Xiang Fei, Billy Kane, Tsugumi Sendo
Xiang Fei and Tsugumi are the only real good news on this team for me. Tsugumi getting the 2D treatment is as grand as Hayato in MvC2. On a personal note this would be my least favorite KOF if I got to put up with two annoying boxers.
Yagami Team: Iori Yagami, Vanessa, Seth, Ramon
The only way I see this team returning is if 2002 really is a dreammatch. For pete sakes stick Iori as an edit character again. The team betryal bit has been done to death literally. I also will never understand the craze that is giving Iori new duds. If he gets them, it won't bother me, but geez people really like running things into the ground.
Bosses confirmed till now: 1) Long (su-bboss) 2) [Unknow] Final boss, Igniz brother
By far, the least important info to me. Only good thing is that maybe the Lin/Long thing will finally get resolved.
Personally, I'd like to see more AOF characters (KOF was much more enjoyable when the FF/AOF roster of characters were equal.) and another all-female team with new & more permanent members (No freaking swapping characters every year. Geez!).
Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see what the future holds.
