Come on... I knew it had to be the Dog av man... I only believe that they are coming up with a lot of anime because the huge economical reach it has... to make it come out quick they do not think that much... but there is bond to be crazy... er, I mean original people that can come with some fresh meat to big monkey daddy...

This phenomenal has happened in a lot of industries.

Read it, ignored it...This reminds me of the stuff people used to say in the 60's about rock and the Beatles (That it wasn't like music in the old days).

Sure there are some recycled ideas and plots (hey, it happens everywhere) and anime that should of never been made. But there are still quality series and movies being made (Jin-Roh, Metropolis, RoD), and as long as they continued to be made any genre is still worthwhile...

Neh, don't really agree with him.
There are lots of new and original anime
(Now and Then, Here and There? :), although
lots of old anime formulas are being
constantly rehashed.
But that doesn't matter! Original or not, if
the story is told well and the characters
likable, that's more than enough to make me
happy.

And imagine what the industry will be like
in a decade or so. We've come so far in
terms of storytelling and animation since
stuff like Speed Racer and Astro Boy :)

Miyazaki doesn't like all the violence
and fan serbisu compared to his "wholesome"
productions?

<watches people getting their heads shot off
in Mononoke Hime>

And he also comments on people becoming more
and more obsessed with anime?

<looks at the flood of Studio Ghibli
merchandise in the market>

Heh. It's a " back in my day... " sort of rant. I.E., everything used to be so great, and now it's all going to hell. Seems older folks do this no matter what culture or country they're from. ^_^

Nah, it isn't.
Anime never was really original, and lately is getting better in my opinion...

I am with old master Miyazaki on this. Old people are wise. I think you can get what I mean from reading the artical so I don't have to write an essay

quote:
"
"Why don't people debate what effect this is having on our children?" asked Mr Miyazaki.
"

quote:
"
"I wonder why there are so many films that contain so much violence and feature sexual content.

"I think there is a chance that the spread of Japanese animation overseas might only lead to embarrassment."

The director even cast doubt on the value of his own films, saying that his work - and animated films in general - could be robbing Japanese children of the time to experience life.

Watching animated films for four or five hours could stifle creativity, he said, describing the situation as "a true dilemma for me".

"People read comics in trains even when they become adults.

"Major newspapers praise the sales achieved by video games.

"Why don't people debate what effect this is having on our children?" asked Mr Miyazaki.
"

If anything, I think it encourages creativity. People who simply absorb and regurgitate factual information are little more than machines, and they generally don't demonstrate much in the way of cleverness or " free thinking " . One needs to take a break from reality, especially if your own personal reality sucks. -_-

Doesn't a statement like that normally lead to a retirement statemen or something? It's normally a faux pa to say something is evil then continue working in the field.

(and BS on animation, comics, and videogames stiffling creativity. I grew up on that stuff and I'm as creative as the next lad!)

Mmmhh... controversial declarations...
But well, we all live in this enviroment, I mean, we all read comics, watch anime, play videogames and stuff, and most of us are creative and with our very own criteria (minus some jerks like the minions from the spoony bard...).
The anime is at dead end? hardly, in America, anime is getting the attention that it got in Japan since the first time, and it's getting stronger every time.

Damn, this anime is killing my neurones! I can't think of more nonsense to babble about...

Eh, it's just one man's opinion. That doesn't make it gospel. Films have always been about copying other films. ^_^ It's the way it was, and the way it will be.

" The Man " , eh? Like Johnny ( 10 points for anybody who knows what I'm talking about ) Ha ha ha, it could also be viewed in that since his works are so successful, he can criticize pretty much anybody else because it's gone to his head. Personally, I've enjoyed many " newer " anime than older ones. He seems to be an older fellow, and this is probably just an aspect of this sense of " exasperation " many older Japanese have with the direction their country is heading...

Johnny Carson?

Anyways, that doesn't sound too different from most movies here in the US. Most films are usually R-rated, with violence and sexual content. My advice:

Don't let your kids see it.

It's as simple as that.

Though it's not in that translated article, Miyazaki also mentions that Evangelion director Anno calls himself "The first of the copy generation", so that would make the generations after him, actually copies of copies.

I don't know what to really make of this since "Anime" itself isn't an original to begin with- it's a derivative from American Animation. Don't take me wrong, but imo, Miyazaki is "getting old".. that is, he's trying to apply his own values to the upcoming generations.

He also kinda sounds like a dad nagging to his son about his crazy music and how good and pure it used to be during his youth on the part where he talks about violence.

Say, wheres that freaky bear from???

Yes, that's what I've thought wen i've read the article. He looks like an old man remembring old times. But it could be also that Miyazaki is pessimist. Some people are pessimist even if they're proven wrong or they're doing great things, as he does.

Why? BTW, the U.S. doesn't equal " the world " . Other countries get much better anime releases than the U.S.

Gasaraki, BGC2040, Bebop, Evangelion, Escaflowne, Blue Seed, Those who Hunt Elves, Silent Mobius, AiKa, Saber Marionette (the three series), Soul Hunter... just some of the series I can see in tv here in Argentina.
